Volleyball Sweeps Memphis in its Last Road Match of the Season
Nov 21, 2021 | Women's Volleyball
MEMPHIS, Tenn -Â The Tulane University volleyball team (17-13, 10-8) sweeps Memphis in its last road match of the 2021 season. The Green Wave overpowered the Tigers with aggressive offense in three straight sets 25-22, 25-18 and 25-21.
Â
The Green Wave bounced back after Friday's loss to SMU with a powerful offensive showing. Tulane hit .274 as a group with 48 kills. The Tigers (12-18, 5-13) could not match the power hitting .147 with only 36 kills.Â
Â
Freshman Michelle Urquhart fronted the Green Wave with 13 kills hitting .321 and adding 15 points to the Tulane's total. Senior Kayla Dinkins followed suit with 11 kills and hit a superb .600 collecting 11 points.
Â
Senior Danyelle Williams and sophomore Anna Davis did their jobs at the net each picking up six kills and a combined for four blocks. The two front row players shined in all areas also adding a total of four digs.Â
The setter's job was split this afternoon between senior Taylor Henigsman and freshman Chelsea Harvey. The two combined for 36 assists in the match.Â
Sophomore libero Sophia Ervanian carried the defense with 14 digs. She garnered some help from Urquhart and Senior Lexie Douglas who dug nine and had seven attacks respectively.Â
Â
The Green Wave took a few points to get the offense running in set one. Once they did there was no turning back. A 6-0-point run put Tulane up 16-12. After a couple of errors and two back-to-back kills form Dinkins the Tigers called a time out at 20-14. The Wave went on to take the first set 25-22.
Â
Set two was a back-and-forth battle, the Wave trailed 6-7. A 7-0 scoring run with Ervanian behind the service line would push the score to 12-7. Although Memphis would try to dig back, the deficit was too much to for them to handle and the Wave took the set 25-18.Â
Â
The Olive and Blue came out swinging in the closing set, going up a quick 5-1. The Tigers took some time and battled back to bring the score within two, 18-16. Three straight kills from Urquhart forced a Tiger timeout at. 21-17. The Wave wouldn't let up taking on three more kills and a well-placed tip to take the set 25-21 and the match 3-0.Â
Â
The Green Wave will return home to Uptown to compete in their last two matches of the season. Wednesday will kick off the last week of the season with UCF at 6 pm inside Avron B. Fogleman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse.Â
