
Beach Volleyball Goes 1-1 on Day One of Bayou Beach Duals

NEW ORLEANS — The Tulane beach volleyball moved to 5-1 in 2021 after sweeping Texas A&M Kingsville and falling to No. 2 FSU in the opening day of the Bayou Beach Duals at the White Sands Volleyball Courts.
Graduate students Eva Torruella and Tarin Mergener teamed up on court one for a quick win against TAMUK's Roxanne Morris and Olivia Nicholson (21-13, 21-13) to get the day started for the Olive and Blue. Torruella totaled 20 kills against the Javelinas, also adding two aces, while Torruella added 10 kills and one block.
From the No. 2 position, sophomore Kendall Peters and graduate student Allie Olsonoski notched a two-set win with 21-17, 21-18 scores against Debra Rogers and Shelby Williams from TAMUK. Peters and Olsonoski each recorded 12 kills in the win, while Olsonoski added two blocks.
Senior Addison Hermstad and sophomore Samantha Mehlman joined forces on court three, earning the win over TAMUK's Tenley Housler and Macy Berg (21-11, 21-9). In the second match of the day, Hermstad and Mehlman forced the Seminoles to three sets, falling to Maddie Anderson and Sara Putt, 17-21, in the first before winning set two, 21-19, and ultimately dropping the third (11-15). Hermstad notched an impressive 15 kills over TAMUK and 17 kills over FSU, totaling six blocks and two aces on Friday. Mehlman totaled 21 kills and two aces in two matches.
From the No. 4 spot, freshman Lara Torruella teamed up with graduate student Avery Arellano to take down TAMUK's Emily North and Macie Satterwhite (21-17, 21-16) in the first match of the day. Arellano totaled 11 kills in the win while Torruella added eight kills and one block.
Seniors Rio Frohoff and Gabriella Becerra swept the Javelinas on court five, defeating Taylorlynn Noga and Adrienne Van Brunt from (21-15, 21-14). Frohoff was a dominant force offensively, recording 17 kills and one ace, while Frohoff added eight kills.
In an exhibition match against TAMUK, sophomore Ashton Mares and freshman Maddie Speicher beat Rylie Anderson and Kailey Estrada in straight sets, 21-14 and 21-19. Speicher earned eight kills and one block in the match while Mares added eight kills and one ace.
