Women's Tennis Falls on the Road at UAB, 4-3

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Tulane women's tennis team had its three-matching winning streak snapped in a 4-3 setback at UAB on Sunday afternoon at George Ward Park.

The Green Wave (8-4) took an early lead over the Blazers (7-5) after scoring a pair of doubles victories on courts two and three, respectively, to take a 1-0 lead in the overall match.

Adelaide Lavery and Kristen Borland won their third straight match, 6-2, over Jana Hecking and Sydney Clarke on court two, while Lahari Yelamanchili and Charlotte Russell took down Annalisa Smith and Megan Bertrands, 6-3, at the No. 3 spot in the lineup for their fourth consecutive victory.

UAB countered by winning four first sets in singles, and were able to win three of the first five matches to finish. Tulane got a lift at No. 1 singles from Mary Caroline Meredith who won, 6-1, 7-6, over Hecking, while 108th-ranked Mackenzie Clark defeated Adela Wassrbauerova, 6-3, 7-5, at No. 2.

Locked in a 3-3 tie, all eyes turned to court five in the only match that was decided in three sets. Bertrands won the first set, 6-2, but Yelamanchili responded by taking the second frame by the same score. Bertrands took control midway through the third before clinching the match with a 6-3 victory.

Next up, the Green Wave stay on the road for its next two matches beginning March 12 at North Texas at 3 p.m., before heading to SMU the following day for a noon contest.
