No. 17 Bowling Heads To New York For Dezy Strong Classic This Weekend
Oct 27, 2022 | Women's Bowling
New Orleans – The No. 17 ranked Tulane University bowling team, after a week off, gets on the road this weekend with a trip to Coram, New York for the Dezy Strong Classic from Friday – Sunday at Coram Country Lanes. The action starts on Friday at 8:40 a.m. The start time on Saturday is 8:30 a.m. with Sunday's action beginning at 7:45 a.m.
"We look to continuing our season progress in this week's tournament and also outperform our stellar performance at last year's event." explained head coach Hayley Veitch. "We may have started our tournament schedule earlier this year, but we are growing and learning as a team at every event. We are looking forward to seeing some different teams at this tournament. which will allow us to have a better understanding of where we currently stand in the nationally rankings."
The Green Wave are one of 18 teams that are invited to participate in the tournament along with Vanderbilt, Stephen F. Austin, Molloy, Louisiana Tech, Fairleigh Dickinson, Youngstown, Merrimack, Bloomfield, UAB, Sam Houston State, St. Francis Brooklyn, Long Island, Mount St. Mary's St. Anslem, Bryant, Saint Francis (Pa) and the host institution Adelphi University. The competitive field includes nine ranked including four in the top 10 in No. 2 Vanderbilt, No. 4 Stephen F. Austin, No. 8 Louisiana Tech and No. 10 Fairleigh Dickinson.
This tournament started last fall, in recognition of the long-time friend, Matt DiStefano, of the Adelphi's head coach, Dennis Kearney. Both men were teachers at Sachem North High School on Long Island. In February 2018, DiStefano was diagnosed with Stage 4 kidney cancer and, in 2019, founded the Dezy Strong Foundation, which was established to provide the opportunity for individuals with cancer to have access to experiences that directly affect a positive mental well-being.
Before his death, Kearney and DiStefano collaborated on an event that would involve the foundation and bowling. Matt passed in January 2020, but he watches on in spirit as that idea became a reality last year.
The first day of competition this weekend, Oct. 28, will be five (5) five-game baker matches with total pins being the goal. In the qualifying rounds, teams will alternate lanes after each baker game until the match is complete.
The second day of the tournament, Oct. 29, is a format of five (5) traditional team games.
On the third day, Oct. 30, teams will complete in three rounds of match play in a playoff bracket. Each of the rounds in match play will be a best-of-seven baker match.
The playoff rounds will be seeded using overall total pin fall standings after the qualifying round (day one) is completed. The higher seed has the choice of starting lane for the first baker game with one exception. The exception is if the match goes to a single deciding baker game, the higher seed has the choice.
The first, second and third place teams will be awarded the team awards.
The six individuals that participate in 100 percent of the traditional matches and have the highest individual averages will earn a position on the all-tournament team. The MVP award is given to the individual with the highest tournament average.
This year's Tulane bowling roster features five returners in sophomore Katharina Mente, senior Jenica Baron, junior Morgan Gitlitz, senior Amelia Vasquez and junior Yarelis Alvarez. Joining the program are three newcomers in freshman Cassidy Williams, sophomore Sofiia Druchyna and freshman Mia Stolakis.
This season, Vasquez is leading the team with her 2,024 total pins, Stolakis has the highest individual performance with her 266 against UMES (10/15) and Druchyna has the highest individual average on the team at 209.6. Tulane sports an overall 17-9 record this season through the first two tournaments.
Next, the program travels to Sam Houston State for the Track Kat Klash from Nov. 4-6.
