Tulane Sailing Off to Strong Start to Spring Season
Feb 19, 2022 | Sailing
NEW ORLEANS. – The Tulane University sailing team opened the spring season with its COED squad and women's crew in action Saturday. A lack of wind limited the Green Wave COED team to just one round on the first day of the Nelson Roltsch Team Race while the women's team dominated the competition to win the USF Women's Team Race in Saint Petersburg, Florida.
Despite only completing one round of racing, the Tulane COED crew sits in a tie for the lead with UC Santa Barbara as each teams hold a 4-1 record.
"While it was certainly disappointing that the breeze evaporated on us the way it did," head coach Charles Higgins said. "I'm quite pleased with how we performed. We lost control at a critical moment against UCSB, but otherwise had a very strong day. In the afternoon we were able to implement our strategy quite well and were able to put the races away rather quickly"
Tulane will return to the water to finish the Nelson Roltsch Team Race on Sunday with the first race beginning at 10 a.m. CT.
"It's still early and we're looking forward to a strong showing tomorrow," Higgins said. "If we can put together a couple more good performances we should be in a great position."
The Green Wave women's team put together a strong first performance going a perfect 12-0 to win the USF Women's Team Race. Skippers Caroline Benson, Mia Hanes and Ciara Rodriguez-Horan led the Wave on the water as the team rolled past Jacksonville, College of Charleston and host-team South Florida.
"With women's team racing being a new discipline in our sport, our ladies have put in some early season hard work and it was highlighted this weekend with our 12-0 victory," assistant coach Jocelyn Rovniak said. "If this has any insight to the future of our season, I am excited to see what more these ladies can accomplish. I'm proud of them and their strong start in our first spring event."
