Tulane Sailing Claims Second Win of the Weekend in the Nelson Roltsch Team Race
Feb 20, 2022 | Sailing
NEW ORLEANS. – The Tulane University sailing COED team claimed its first victory of the season as it came out on top of the Nelson Roltsch Team Race on Sunday. The Green Wave posted an 8-2 record in races on the second day of the event to land in first in the field of six.
Day two proved to be a much better day of sailing with a stable 8-13 knots out of the East with temperatures in the 60s. Two more rounds of racing were completed on the day with Tulane coming out on top with a 12-3 overall record through three total rounds.
"Great feeling to come away with the team win this weekend," head coach Charles Higgins said. "We had a bit of a slow start to the day and dropped a couple races we really shouldn't have. Fortunately, we rebounded from those first two losses to win the last 8 races in convincing fashion."
The Green Wave found itself in the top spot at the end of the event besting UC Santa Barbara by one victory. Skippers Cameron Giblin, Marcus Huttunen, Thad Lettsome and Asher Zittrer along with crews Andrea Riefkohl-Gonzalez, Grace Siwicki, Ellie Spearman and Gillian Perrell led the Wave on the water to its first win of the year at the Nelson Roltsch Team Race.
"On the weekend winning both our women's and coed regattas with a combined record of 24 wins and only three losses is a testament to just how much depth our team has," Higgins said. "Our practices are highly competitive, and that is going to help translate to more top results in the future."
The Tulane sailing team will be back in action on March 5-6 at a pair of separate events. The Green Wave women's team will host the Green Wave Women's Regatta while the COED squad will travel to South Carolina to compete in the Bob Bavier Team Race hosted by the College of Charleston.
