Oct 26, 2023 | Men's Basketball
NEW ORLEANS – Tulane University men's basketball rode a 17-0 scoring run to close the first half to notch an 83-72 victory over Mississippi College on Thursday in Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse in its first exhibition game ahead of the 2023-24 campaign. The Green Wave used size and strength to control the contest outscoring the Choctaws 42-26 in the paint.
Senior Jaylen Forbes led five scorers for the Wave in double figures with 18 points including three made three-pointers. Collin Holloway posted 16 points on a perfect shooting night from the field going 7-for-7. Filling up the stat sheet was Sion James who finished with 12 points, seven rebounds, three assists, and three blocks. Senior Kevin Cross and newcomer Gregg Glenn III rounded out the top performers for Tulane tallying 11 points and 10 points, respectively.
Tulane got the offense rolling early jumping out to an 8-0 lead in the first three minutes of the contest. The action balanced out over the next several minutes of the first half with the Green Wave and the Choctaws trading buckets and exchanging the lead.
Momentum flipped in favor of the Green Wave after seven straight points from Holloway put Tulane in front 28-23 with 5:08 to play. The solo scoring run by Holloway went on to spark a 17-0 run in the final four minutes of the half sending Tulane into the locker room holding a commanding 48-27 advantage.
Forbes and Holloway led all scorers at the break with 13 and 11 points each. Transfer Kolby King played a key role in the Green Wave's run to end the half scoring five of his eight first half point during the spurt.
Tulane maintained its distance through much of the second half, but Mississippi College didn't go away without a fight. A layup from Glenn III matched the largest lead of the night for Tulane at 21 points with 5:07 on the clock before the Choctaws made one last push to chip away.
The lead never dipped below double digits for Tulane down the stretch as the Green Wave secured an 83-72 victory in its return to action in Uptown.
Up next, Tulane will host Henderson State for its final tune up before the 2023-24 regular season begins. The exhibition matchup between the Green Wave and the Reddies will start at 6 p.m. next Thursday, November 2.
