New Orleans – Tulane's women's basketball team will host an exhibition game against Loyola University Louisiana on Monday at 6 p.m. inside Avron B. Fogelman Arena in Devlin Fieldhouse. Tickets are available for $5.
The Green Wave, under the leadership of Lisa Stockton, were picked for sixth in the American Athletic Conference (AAC) this season. The team went 18-14 last year and had a mark of 7-9 in AAC play. Coach Stockton enters her 30th year at the helm of Tulane. The program returns eight players from last season's roster for the 2023-24 season including 2023 American Athletic Conference All-Tournament Team selection Kyren Whittington. The Green Wave have added two freshmen, in center Lily Ba and point guard Joy Madison-Key along with graduate transfer forward Hannah Pratt and graduate transfer guard Kaylah Rainey. Last season, Tulane was selected for a WNIT post season appearance for the third consecutive year. Coach Stockton also became the all-time winningest women's basketball coach in the state of Louisiana during the campaign and was elected to the CUSA Hall of Fame over the summer. The team's top returner scorers from last season are Whittington and Marta Galic. Both averaged 11.9 points per game. Galic also led the team in rebounding a year ago with her average of 6.7 rebounds a game.
Loyola was picked to win the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) this year. The program has won the SSAC regular season title the last seven seasons. In 2022-23, the Wolfpack went 27-3 and 17-1 in the SSAC. Kellie Kennedy, who served as a member of Coach Stockton's staff for 10 years from 1996-2006, is in her 15th year in charge of Loyola's program. The Wolfpack are expected to be led by NAIA All-American Sandra Cannady. Cannady averaged a double-double last season at 15.6 points and 10.3 rebounds per game. Also returning is SSAC All-Conference selection Taylor Thomas. Thomas averaged 12 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 1.4 steals per game. The Wolfpack have an equal mix of seven returners and seven newcomers. Among their newcomers are three Division I transfers.
Tulane opens the regular season with a contest against Stetson on Nov. 6 at 5 p.m. The program will host a total of eight non-conference games this season, including the Tulane Holiday Classic (Dec. 20-21) plus makes trips to Macon, Georgia to take on Mercer (Nov. 19), the Cayman Islands to participate in the Inaugural Women's Basketball Cayman Islands Classic (Nov. 24-25) to play against Virginia and Virginia Tech and to Springfield, Missouri to take on Missouri State (Dec. 1).
