
Women’s Basketball Hosts Prairie View A&M This Tuesday

New Orleans – Tulane's women's basketball team (1-1) gets back on the court and hosts Prairie View A&M (2-0) on Tuesday, Nov. 14, at 6 p.m. The game will be shown live on ESPN+ while Paul Boron has the radio call on the 88.3 FM or on the Varsity Network App.
Tulane split the team's first two home games to start the season. The program defeated Stetson in the opener by a 68-57 margin. Kyren Whittington led the team with her 16 points. She also tied for the team lead with her five assists along with Kaylah Rainey. Whittington was one of four players in double figures in the contest against the Hatters with Marta Galic chipping in 12, Hannah Pratt getting 11 points and eight rebounds plus Irina Parau totaling 10 points and six boards. The victory made Tulane 28-2 in home openers and 26-4 in season openers under Coach Stockton. The team then fell to a pesky Nicholls program by a 69-66 score on Nov. 8. Pratt led the team with her 17 points. She was one four in double figures for the Green Wave with Whittington (15), Parau (14) and Galic (14) all joining her. Parau also had 10 rebounds against the Colonels for the second double-double of her career. Rainey led the team in assists for the second time with six helpers against Nicholls.
Prairie View A&M is off to a 2-0 start this season after the 85-70 victory over McNeese State on Sunday. The program defeated Huston Tillotson to start the campaign by a 102-62 margin. Ryann Payne, an LSU transfer, is the team leader with her average of 18 points per game. She is also shooting 52.2 percent from the field. Gerlyn Smith is averaging a double-double at 13 points and 11 rebounds per game. Jada Robertson (12 points) and Desiree Lewis (10 points) are also both averaging in double figures this season. The Panthers went 15-15 last season including a mark of 12-7 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC). They are picked for sixth in the SWAC this season although they did earn a first-place vote.
Tulane is 2-0 all-time against Prairie View A&M. The last meeting was in 2009 with Tulane winning 67-63. The only previous meeting to that was in 1993 with the Green Wave rolling to an 80-38 victory. Tulane is 24-8 all-time against current schools in the SWAC. The last time that the Green Wave faced a SWAC opponent was last season in the 67-52 victory over Southern.
The Green Wave, under the leadership of Coach Stockton, were picked for sixth in the American Athletic Conference (AAC) this season. The team went 18-14 last year and had a mark of 7-9 in AAC play. Coach Stockton is in her 30th year at the helm of Tulane. The program returns eight players from last season's roster for the 2023-24 season including 2023 American Athletic Conference All-Tournament Team selection Kyren Whittington. The Green Wave have added two freshmen, center Lily Ba and point guard Joy Madison-Key, along with graduate transfer forward Hannah Pratt and graduate transfer guard Kaylah Rainey. Last season, Tulane was selected for a WNIT post season appearance for the third consecutive year. Coach Stockton also became the all-time winningest women's basketball coach in the state of Louisiana during the campaign and was elected to the CUSA Hall of Fame over the summer. The team's top returner scorers from last season are Kyren Whittington and Marta Galic. Both averaged 11.9 points per game. Galic also led the team in rebounding a year ago with her average of 6.7 rebounds a game.
Next, Tulane plays its first road game of the 2023-24 season as the program travels to Macon, Georgia to take on Mercer on Sunday, Nov. 19, at 1 p.m.
