NEW ORLEANS – Tulane's women's basketball team (2-1) plays the team's first road game of the season and travels to Macon, Georgia to take on Mercer (1-3) on Sunday, Nov. 19. The game will be shown live on ESPN+ while Paul Boron has the radio call on the 88.3 FM or on the Varsity Network App.
Last time out, Tulane defeated Prairie View A&M on Nov. 14 by a 71-46 score. Kyren Whittington led the team in scoring for the second time this season with her 20 points. She also totaled seven rebounds. Amira Mabry had a near double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds. Marta Galic recorded 12 points. Tulane's held the Panthers to just 14 points in the final 20 minutes of action. The win improved Tulane to 25-8 all-time against schools from the Southwestern Conference (SWAC). The win made the Green Wave 3-0 all-time against Prairie View.
Mercer lost its last game by a 77-57 score to Georgia on Thursday. The Bears are on a two-game skid as the program fell to Clemson earlier this week. On the season, Stacie Jones leads the team with her double-double average of 12.3 points and 10.5 rebounds. She is also shooting 54.5 percent from the field. Briana Peguero also averages in double figures at 11.5 points per game. The Bears went 12-16 last season but made the NCAA Tournament in both 2021 and 2022.
Tulane is 0-1 all-time against Mercer. The only meeting was in 1983 with Mercer winning 79-67 in Mobile, Alabama. Tulane is 7-2 all-time against current schools in the Southern Conference (SoCON). The last time that the Green Wave faced a SoCON opponent was in 2015 in the 74-53 victory over UNC Greensboro.
The Mercer game is Tulane's first game away from home this season. The Green Wave have won the last six road or neutral games to start a season with the last loss being to Mississippi State in 2016. Overall, under Coach Stockton, the Green Wave are 18-11 in their first game away from home to begin a campaign.
The Green Wave, under the leadership of head coach Lisa Stockton, was picked for sixth in the American Athletic Conference (AAC) this season. The team went 18-14 last year and had a mark of 7-9 in AAC play. Coach Stockton is in her 30th year at the helm of Tulane. The program returns eight players from last season's roster for the 2023-24 season including 2023 American Athletic Conference All-Tournament Team selection Kyren Whittington. The Green Wave have added two freshmen, center Lily Ba and point guard Joy Madison-Key, along with graduate transfer forward Hannah Pratt and graduate transfer guard Kaylah Rainey. Last season, Tulane was selected for a WNIT post season appearance for the third consecutive year. Coach Stockton also became the all-time winningest women's basketball coach in the state of Louisiana during the campaign and was elected to the CUSA Hall of Fame over the summer. The team's top returner scorers from last season are Kyren Whittington and Marta Galic. Both averaged 11.9 points per game. Galic also led the team in rebounding a year ago with her average of 6.7 rebounds a game.
Next, Tulane travels and spends the Thanksgiving Break at the Cayman Islands Classic from Nov. 24-25. The Green Wave face off with Virginia on Friday at 10 a.m. and then take on No. 9 nationally Virginia Tech at 10 a.m. on Saturday with both games being held at John Gray Gymnasium.
