
Women’s Basketball Falls to Virginia 81-59

George Town, Cayman Islands – Hannah Pratt led the Tulane women's basketball team (3-2) with her 15 points in an 81-59 loss to Virginia (4-1) in the team's first game of the Cayman Islands Classic held at John Gray Gymnasium on Friday in George Town in the Cayman Islands.
Besides her team-leading points, Pratt also totaled seven rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks. Her three assists were also a team-best. Kyren Whittington scored in double figures with 12 points and led the club with her four steals. Amira Mabry had a near double-double of nine points and nine rebounds. Kaylah Rainey scored a season-high eight points plus handed out a pair of assists. Marta Galic recorded eight points, two assists and two steals. Irina Parau had six rebounds and a steal. Chiarra Grattini totaled four points. Joy Madison-Key scored three points and had a rebound. McKenzi Carter had a rebound. Lily Ba picked up a rebound and a steal.
The Cavaliers were led by 14 points from Yonta Vaughn. Sam Bunelle totaled 12 points. Alexia Smith recorded 10 points and three rebounds. Kymora Johnson had nine points and nine assists.
The game featured just one lead change and two tied scores. Tulane shot 31 percent from the field (18-for-58), 26.1 percent from three-point range (6-for-23) and 70.8 percent from free throw line (17-for-24). The team also had 43 rebounds, nine assists, 10 steals and four blocks.
Virginia shot 40.5 percent from the field (30-for-74), 42.1 percent from three-point range (15-for-35) and 85.7 percent from the line (6-for-7). The Cavaliers also had 43 rebounds, 20 assists, 13 steals and four blocks.
Virginia was able to outscore Tulane 28-6 off turnovers, held a 26-22 edge in points in the paint and led 49-16 in points off the bench.
Tulane started strong in this one and raced out to 24-12 lead after the first quarter. At one point in the first quarter Tulane had built a 15-point lead, 20-5, after the second of two made free throws from Whittington at the 3:01 mark. The Cavaliers stormed back to outscore the Green Wave 24-10 in the second quarter to take a slight 36-24 lead heading into the half. Virginia kept momentum going after the break with a 27-8 advantage in the third quarter. Tulane was able to fight back and only were edged 18-17 in the fourth quarter to fall by a final score of 81-59 to the Cavaliers.
Next, Tulane continues the Cayman Islands Classic and takes on No. 9 nationally Virginia Tech at 10 a.m. on Saturday at John Gray Gymnasium.

The loss was Tulane's first-ever to Virginia in the fourth game of the series…Kyren Whittington has now scored in double figures in all five games this season…With the loss,Tulane fell to 35-55 all-time against current schools in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).
