Tulane Shoots Past Prairie View A&M 98-77

NEW ORLEANS – Tulane University men's basketball (5-1) dominated the second half to defeat Prairie View A&M (4-3) 98-77 Wednesday night in Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse. The Green Wave scored 55 points on 65.2 percent shooting to outscore the Panthers by 16 in the second half.
With the win, Tulane improves to 5-1 on the season marking the Wave's best start since the 2019-20 campaign when it started 7-1.
Ten different players finished in the scoring column for the Green Wave in the contest including a pair with 20 or more points. Kevin Cross notched his third 20-point plus performance of the season as he poured in 21 points on a perfect 6-of-6 from the floor including 2-of-2 from downtown. Collin Holloway also tallied 20 points and was unblemished from the charity stripe shooting 8-of-8 from the free throw line.
Sion James finished in double figures for the third consecutive game and the fifth time this season posting 16 points to go with four rebounds. Kolby King flirted with a triple-double in the contest as he ended the night with 15 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists. Tre' Williams was the final player with double-digit points for Tulane scoring 10 points off the bench for the Wave.
As a team, Tulane shot 62.2 percent from the field tallying 40 points in the paint. The shooting performance marked the highest field goal percentage by Tulane under head coach Ron Hunter.
The Green Wave also did damage from the free throw line knocking down 36-of-48 from the charity stripe. The 36 made free throws is the second most in program history and the most since the Wave made 38 against UNC-Charlotte on January 22, 1994. The 48 attempts also tied for the fifth most in program history and the most since 2013.
The matchup between the Wave and the Panthers went back and forth early with the lead changing hands 11 times in the first 11-plus minutes. Prairie View made its largest run of the evening scoring eight-straight to take its largest lead 31-24 with 7:27 to play in the first half. Tulane responded to close the first half on a 19-7 run and take a 43-38 advantage into the locker room.
Cross led the Green Wave at the break with 13 points while Holloway and Williams added eight and seven, respectively.
After the Panthers scored the first five points of the second half, Tulane sparked its momentum from the end of the first half to push its lead out to double-digits (55-45) with 15:01 on the clock. The Green Wave never looked back after the advantage reached double figures expanding the lead to as many as 26 points with 4:20 left to play. Ultimately, Tulane closed out the win 98-77 over the Panthers to improve to 5-1 on the season.
The trio of Holloway, King, and James each tallied double figures in the second half. Holloway and King led the team after the break with 12 points each while James posted 10 second half points.
Up next, Tulane will play its first true road game on Sunday as it travel to New York to face Fordham. The matchup between the Green Wave and the Rams is set to tipoff at 12 p.m. CT on ESPN+.
