Tulane Dominates the Paint to Defeat Northwestern State 88-71

NEW ORLEANS – Tulane University men's basketball (2-0) attacked the rim with purpose to tally 52 points in the paint en route to an 88-71 victory over Northwestern State (1-1) inside Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse Thursday night. With the win the Green Wave has started 2-0 for the second season in a row.
Four players posted double figures for the Wave in the second consecutive game as Kevin Cross led the team with 23 points on 8-of-13 shooting. The senior forward also added eight rebounds and six assists.
Kolby King became the second player for Tulane to score 20 or more points in the first two games of the season since 2010 finishing with 20 points along with four steals. The feat matches Cross who scored 20 or more points in the first two games for the Green Wave last season.
Collin Holloway recorded his second consecutive game with double-digit points tallying 18 to go with five rebounds. Off the bench Gregg Glenn III rounded out the top scorers for Tulane with 15 points and a team-high nine boards.
Tulane outscored the Demons 52-32 in the paint and shot an impressive 51.8 percent from the field thanks to its aggressiveness around the rim. The Green Wave also turned in an outstanding performance from the charity stripe shooting 29-of-32 for 90.6 percent as a team.
Defensively, the Wave swiped double-digit steals for the second game in a row recording 12 as a team against Northwestern State.
The Green Wave defense forced the Colonels into 18 turnovers swiping 13 steals as a team. Tulane turned those turnovers into 22 points including 15 fastbreak points.
Tulane scored the first six points of the contest to take the early advantage before the Demons managed to take their first lead with 13:42 on the clock. The Wave responded with a 12-3 scoring run to go up 27-18, but Northwestern State still did not back down tying the game at 29-29 with 7:18 to go. Tulane outscored the Demons 19-11 to close the first half and take a 48-40 lead into the break.
Cross and Glenn III led the way for the Wave in the first half with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
With 14:34 to play in the game Tulane began a 19-4 run to build its largest lead of the night at 80-55. Holloway and King led the charge in the second half and most importantly during the scoring run to extend the lead. The duo combined for 23 points in the final 20 minutes to help the Green Wave close out the 88-71 victory and move to 2-0 on the season.
Freshman Mier Panoam registered his first collegiate points and transfer Asher Woods scored his first point with the Green Wave in the second half.
Up next, Tulane will welcome Sacramento State into Uptown as part of the SoCal Challenge on Friday, November 17. Tipoff between the Green Wave and the Hornets is set for 6 p.m. on ESPN+.
