Women’s Basketball Wraps Up Homestand Hosting the Tulane Holiday Tournament

New Orleans, Louisiana – Tulane's women's basketball team (5-4) tries to keep the program's two-game winning streak going as it hosts the Tulane Holiday Tournament this week. The program starts the tournament taking on Little Rock (0-9) on Wednesday at 12 p.m. The winner of that game will face the winner of the second game of the tournament (Maine vs. Duquesne) in the winner's game at approximately 2:30 on Thursday. The loser of the opening game takes on the loser of the second game starting at 11 a.m. on Dec. 21. All the Tulane games will be shown live on ESPN+ while Paul Boron has the radio calls on 88.3 FM or the Varsity Network App.
Tulane won the Holiday Tournament last season with Rachel Hakes being named MVP. Marta Galic and Kyren Whittington joined Hakes on the 2022 Holiday All-Tournament Team. The Green Wave have won the tournament a total of 21 times since 1996. The program has also won the tournament 12 of the last 13 times that it has been contested. No tournament was held in both 2020 and 2021.
Last time out, Tulane won the program's second straight game with a 67-52 victory over Howard on Dec. 10. The program put four players in double figures and were led by Kyren Whittington's 22 points. It was her fourth game scoring 20 or more points in a game this season. Also reaching double figures for Tulane in the contest was Chiara Grattini (15), Hannah Pratt (14) and Marta Galic (12). Whittington led the team in rebounding with eight. It was her most rebounds in a game since the 2020 season. Grattini tripled her previous career high for points in the game in shooting 4-for-7 from three-point range in the victory over the Bison.
In the team's first game of the week on Dec. 6, the program earned a 90-63 victory over UNO. Whittington led the team with her 22 points. Galic chipped in with 18 points and career-high six assists. Amira Mabry reached double figures with 13 as did Irina Parau with her 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Whittington was named to the American Athletic Conference's (AAC) Weekly Honor Roll on Dec. 11 after she averaged 22 points, six rebounds and 4.5 steals per game in leading the team to a 2-0 week. She also shot 60.7 percent from the field and 87.5 percent from the free throw line. She also was honored as the Louisiana Sports Writers Association's (LSWA) Women's Basketball Player of the Week.
Little Rock is off to a slow start (0-9) as the program has faced four Southeast Conference (SEC) schools (Arkansas, Alabama, Ole Miss and Auburn) and a Big 12 school (Kansas State) in the first nine games. Faith Lee is leading the team with her average of 12.8 points per game. Jaiyah Harris-Smith is putting up 9.2 points and 3.4 rebounds per contest. She also leads the team with her 37 assists. The Trojans were picked for second in the Ohio Valley Conference (OVC) this season after going 21-11 and having a mark of 17-1 in the OVC a season ago. Joe Foley is in his 37th season as a head coach and has 854 victories in his career.

The Dukes have four players averaging in double figures with Megan McConnell leading the team with her averaging 12.6 points per game. She is doing a bit of everything with a team-leading 44 total assists plus getting 8.2 rebounds per game. She also leads the squad in steals with 25. Nae Bernard is putting up 12.2 points per game. Megan Tess Myers totals 10.8 points per game. Amaya Hamilton is putting up 10.1 points per contest. Duquesne was picked for fifth in the Atlantic 10 Conference after going 19-12 and having an 8-8 mark in the A-10 last season. The program returns all five starters

Coach Stockton is 16-10 all-time against the current schools in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
Maine (6-5) have won two of the last three games. The program has been led by Anne Simon. Simon is averaging 20.1 points, 7.4 rebounds, 2.4 steals and 3.0 assists per game. She is also shooting 46.2 percent from the field and 81.3 percent from the free throw line. Adrianna Smith averages a double-double of 13.2 points and 10.8 rebounds. She also leads the club in assists with 45. Caroline Bornemann sports an average of 7.5 points and 5.1 rebounds per game. Maine won 27 America East (AE) Regular Season/Tournament titles in their program history. The team is picked for second in the America East this season with Simon and Smith both being chosen as Preseason All-Conference. Amy Vachon is in her seventh year leading the program. She aided the team to AE titles in both 2021 and 2022.
Tulane and Maine have squared off a total of four times. Tulane lost the first game of the series in 1987 but have won three straight against the Black Bears. The last time the schools met was a 42-34 Tulane victory in 2017. That game was also the last time that Tulane faced off with a school from the America East. The program returns eight players from last season's roster for the 2023-24 season including 2023 American Athletic Conference All-Tournament Team selection Kyren Whittington. The Green Wave have added two freshmen, center Lily Ba and point guard Joy Madison-Key, along with graduate transfer forward Hannah Pratt and graduate transfer guard Kaylah Rainey. Last season, Tulane was selected for a WNIT post season appearance for the third consecutive year. Coach Stockton also became the all-time winningest women's basketball coach in the state of Louisiana during the campaign and was elected to the CUSA Hall of Fame over the summer. The team's top returner scorers from last season are Kyren Whittington and Marta Galic. Both averaged 11.9 points per game. Galic also led the team in rebounding a year ago with her average of 6.7 rebounds a game.
After this week's games, Tulane takes a break for the holidays before getting into AAC league play with a pair of road games. The program travels to take on Wichita State on Dec. 30 at 2 p.m. and then Tulsa in Oklahoma on Jan. 2 at 6:30 p.m.
