
Women’s Basketball Opens American Athletic Conference Play With A Pair Of Games

Wichita, Kansas – Tulane's women's basketball team (7-4) tries to keep the program's four-game winning streak going as it opens American Athletic Conference (AAC) play traveling to take on Wichita State (4-8) on Saturday, Dec. 30, at 2 p.m. and then Tulsa (10-3) on Tuesday, Jan. 2, at 6:30 p.m. this week. All the Tulane games will be shown live on ESPN+ while Paul Boron has the radio calls on 88.3 FM or the Varsity Network App.
These two games will be the first two conference games of the season for Tulane. In her career with the Green Wave, Lisa Stockton is 17-12 in her conference opener.
Last time out, Tulane won the team's fourth consecutive game with a thrilling 64-61 victory over Maine to win the Tulane Holiday Tournament by a 64-61 margin on Dec. 21. The tournament title was the 21st time the team has won the Tulane Holiday Tournament since 1996 and the 12th time in the last 14 times the tournament has been contested. Kyren Whittington led the team with her 19 points. Marta Galic recorded 18 points and eight rebounds. Hannah Pratt also reached double figures with 10 points. Irina Parau led the team with 11 rebounds. Kaylah Rainey tied her career-best with nine assists. She also scored eight points to match her season high.
In the team's first game of the tournament on Dec. 20 against Little Rock, Galic led the charge with a career-high 24 points. Whittington also reached double figures with 15 points in the team's 66-57 home victory over Little Rock.
Following the conclusion of the tournament, Tulane had a pair of player named to the Tulane Holiday All-Tournament Team as Galic was named MVP and Whittington was voted a spot.
For her strong week of performances, Galic was also named to the AAC's Weekly Honor Roll after she averaged 21 points and five rebounds a game while shooting 50 percent from the field, 52 percent from three-point range and 83 percent from the line. Her selection was the third time that Tulane had a player named to the league's weekly honor roll as Whittington was named on both Nov. 20 and Dec. 11.
Wichita State, who are under the direction of Terry Nooner this season, are 4-8 thus far. The program has lost four straight including a 76-74 defeat to Oral Roberts on Dec. 20. Sierra Morrow leads the team with her average of 15.3 points per game. She is one of four that is reaching double figures for the Shockers this season with Daniela Abies putting up 12.3, Tre'Zure Jobe tallying 11.8 and Salese Blow totaling 10.1. Abies leads the team in rebounding at 6.8 boards per game. Jobe leads the squad in assists (29) and steals (24).
The all-time series is knotted up at six all since these teams started playing each other in 2003. The school's split the series last season with the Shockers earning a 69-61 victory in the last meeting on Feb. 9.
Tulsa has been red-hot and have won the program's last five games including a pair of victories at the Maui Tournament before the holidays. The program is an impressive 5-0 at home this season and take on Memphis at home on Saturday before welcoming in Tulane. Temira Poindexter leads the team with her average of 20.5 points per game. She also leads the club in blocks with 20. Delanie Crawford is averaging 17.5 points per game. She is also the team leader in rebounding with 78, Katia Gallegos leads the club with her 37 assists. She is tied for the team lead with 14 steals along with Mady Cartwright.
Tulane leads the all-time series with Tulsa by a 28-9 margin. The Green Wave have won eight in a row over the Golden Hurricane including a 69-67 victory last February.
The Green Wave, under the leadership of Coach Stockton, were picked for sixth in the American Athletic Conference (AAC) this season. The team went 18-14 last year and had a mark of 7-9 in AAC play. Coach Stockton is in her 30th year at the helm of Tulane. The program returns eight players from last season's roster for the 2023-24 season including 2023 American Athletic Conference All-Tournament Team selection Kyren Whittington. The Green Wave have added two freshmen, center Lily Ba and point guard Joy Madison-Key, along with graduate transfer forward Hannah Pratt and graduate transfer guard Kaylah Rainey. Last season, Tulane was selected for a WNIT post season appearance for the third consecutive year. Coach Stockton also became the all-time winningest women's basketball coach in the state of Louisiana during the campaign and was elected to the CUSA Hall of Fame over the summer. The team's top returner scorers from last season are Kyren Whittington and Marta Galic. Both averaged 11.9 points per game. Galic also led the team in rebounding a year ago with her average of 6.7 rebounds a game.
After this week's games, Tulane returns home to host South Florida on Jan. 6 at 2 p.m. at Devlin Fieldhouse.
