
Women’s Basketball Drops Conference Opener to Wichita State, 63-60

Wichita, Kansas – Kyren Whittington tallied a team-high 17 points to lead Tulane's women's basketball team (7-5, 0-1 AAC) in a close 63-60 defeat at the hands of Wichita State (5-8, 1-0 AAC) in the team's conference opener on Saturday at Charles Koch Arena The loss snapped a season-long four-game winning streak for the Green Wave.
Whittington shot 8-for-14 from the field. She also tied for the team lead with her seven rebounds and four assists. Marta Galic heated up in the fourth quarter to reach double figures with 15 points. She also had five rebounds and two assists. Amira Mabry totaled 10 points plus a tied for team-leading seven rebounds. Irina Parau picked up eight points and seven rebounds. Hannah Pratt had seven rebounds and a pair of points. Chiara Grattini totaled six points, four rebounds and two assists off the bench
Wichita State was led by 21 points from Tre'Zure Jobe. Jobe also had a game-high eight assists plus five rebounds. Salese Blow totaled eight points. Ambah Koucun also chipped in with eight points.
The game featured 12 tied scores and 15 lead changes. Tulane's largest lead was four points in the first quarter. Wichita State's largest lead was five points in the fourth quarter. Tulane held the lead for nearly 25 minutes of the game, but the Shockers came on strong in the second half to take the lead in the third. Tulane outscored WSU 40-22 in the paint and 12-9 in second chance points but were outscored on the fast break 10-4. Tulane shot 41.3 percent from the field (26-for-63), 19 percent from three-point range (4-for-21) and 44.4 percent from the line (4-for-9). The Green Wave had 40 rebounds, 16 assists and six steals.
Wichita State shot 40.4 percent from the field (21-for-52), 33.3 percent from three-point range (7-for-21) and 70 percent from the line (14-for-20). The Shockers had 35 rebounds, 13 assists, eight steals and a block.
Tulane led 17-14 after the first quarter and held a slight 28-26 advantage at the break. The Shockers took the lead in the third quarter, 41-39, and kept momentum going in outscoring the Green Wave 22-21 to win this one 63-60.
Next, Tulane continues American Athletic Conference (AAC) play and travels to take on Tulsa on Jan. 2 at 6:30 p.m. in Oklahoma.
