New Orleans, Louisiana – Tulane's women's basketball team (3-4), after four straight road games, returns home to Devlin Fieldhouse with a pair of games this week. The program will take on crosstown rival UNO (1-6) on Wednesday at 6 p.m. and Howard University (1-8) on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both games will be shown live on ESPN+ while Paul Boron has the radio calls on 88.3 FM or the Varsity Network App.
Last time out, Tulane lost the program's third consecutive road game with a 70-60 loss to Missouri State on Nov. 30. The program put three players in double figures with Marta Galic leading the squad with her 19 points. It was her second time leading the team in scoring this season. Kyren Whittington was held below double figures for the first time this season although she did contribute a game-high three steals. UNO have lost their last three games including a 44-41 loss to Louisiana on Saturday. The team's lone victory on the campaign came over Alcorn State on Nov. 21. The Privateers lead the all-time series with Tulane by a 30-22 count, but Tulane has won the last five meetings and 12 of the last 13 with UNO since 1994. This is only the fourth meeting between the schools since 2013. The first-ever meeting between the schools was in 1976. Tulane is 87-68 all-time against current schools in the Southland Conference (SLC). Tulane defeated UNO by a 90-37 score last season.
Howard has had a slow start to their season and have lost seven in a row with their only victory being on Nov. 9 against Mount St. Mary's. Nile Miller is the leading rebounder at 6.1 per game. The program has put together five straight winning seasons and finished as the runner-up at the 2023 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Championships. The team was voted second in the MEAC this season in the preseason poll and had three players earn All-MEAC Team recognition including the Preseason Player of the Year.
The Green Wave and Bison have faced off against each other twice. The Bison defeated Tulane 67-59 on Nov. 19, 2004. The Green Wave evened the all-time series with an 84-79 victory on Nov. 18, 2005. Those are also the only two games that Tulane and Head Coach Lisa Stockton have ever played against current MEAC competition.
The Green Wave, under the leadership of Coach Stockton, were picked for sixth in the American Athletic Conference (AAC) this season. The team went 18-14 last year and had a mark of 7-9 in AAC play. Coach Stockton is in her 30th year at the helm of Tulane. The program returns eight players from last season's roster for the 2023-24 season including 2023 American Athletic Conference All-Tournament Team selection Kyren Whittington. The Green Wave have added two freshmen, center Lily Ba and point guard Joy Madison-Key, along with graduate transfer forward Hannah Pratt and graduate transfer guard Kaylah Rainey. Last season, Tulane was selected for a WNIT post season appearance for the third consecutive year. Coach Stockton also became the all-time winningest women's basketball coach in the state of Louisiana during the campaign and was elected to the CUSA Hall of Fame over the summer. The team's top returner scorers from last season are Kyren Whittington and Marta Galic. Both averaged 11.9 points per game. Galic also led the team in rebounding a year ago with her average of 6.7 rebounds a game.
After the week's games, Tulane takes a break for final exams before hosting the Tulane Holiday Tournament from Dec. 20-21. The team faces off against Little Rock on Dec. 20 at noon. The other game held at Devlin Fieldhouse that day sees Maine and Duquesne squaring off at 2 p.m. or 30 minutes following the conclusion of the first game. The winners of the first two games will play against each other on Dec. 21 to determine the champion, while the losers of the first two games will also play against each other in the first game of the second day.ÂÂ
