
Big Sixth Inning Key in Quakers Victory

NEW ORLEANS – Visiting Penn got four runs in the top of the sixth inning to break a 2-2 deadlock and went on to win 8-5 Friday evening on Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.

The win lifted the Quakers to 4-5 overall this season, while the Green Wave dipped to 2-13.

Penn reliever David Shoemaker (1-0) worked four and two-thirds innings in relief to get the victory, allowing three runs on six hits with six strikeouts and four walks. The save went Edward Sarti, his second, after he got the game's final out.

Tulane starter Dylan Carmouche (0-3) pitched into the sixth, surrendering five runs on nine hits with 10 strikeouts and two free passes. It was the lefthander's third double-digit strikeout performance in 2023.

Both teams' pitching staffs registered big strikeout numbers, with the victors fanning 14 and Tulane responding with 19.

Penn catcher Jackson Appel and shortstop Davis Baker combined to go 6-for-8 at the plate with three runs scored between them. Designated hitter Jarrett Pokrovsky also went 2-for-4 with three RBI.

For Tulane, first baseman Brady Marget, left fielder Jackson Linn, second baseman Chase Engelhard and right fielder Teo Banks all collected two hits. Marget scored twice and Banks drove in a pair, as well.

Engelhard got the home team on the board first with an RBI single to left in the opening frame, but the Quakers regained a 2-1 advantage with two runs in the top of the third. In the bottom half, the Olive and Blue's Marget tied the game at 2 when he smoked his second homer of the season over the wall in right-center.

After Penn had the big sixth inning (four runs came on four hits), Tulane's Linn brought home Marget with a double to left to trim the Quakers' lead to 6-3.

Banks put the game's final two runs on the board in the home half of the ninth as he drove in shortstop Gavin Schulz and Engelhard.

Tulane got runners on consistently Friday, but ended up stranding 13 to just five for Penn.

The second game of the series will be Saturday evening at 6 p.m.
