NEW ORLEANS – Tulane pitchers Chandler Welch and reliever Michael Lombardi turned in an outstanding effort on the mound as the host Green Wave defeated visiting Columbia 5-2 Saturday evening on Greer Field inside Turchin Stadium.
Â
The win improved Tulane's record to 4-15 overall and evened the series between the two teams. Columbia now sits at 6-7 overall.
Â
Welch (2-1) went five innings, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks with three strikeouts. Lombardi finished the contest superbly and picked up his second save, yielding just one hit, while fanning seven batters.
Â
Columbia starter Joe Sheets (1-1) suffered the defeat but all four runs he allowed were unearned as the Lions committed four errors on the evening.Â
Â
Seven different Tulane players reached base through the benefit of a hit, with second baseman Chase Engelhard going 2-for-4.Â
Â
Third baseman Seth Dardar went 2-for-4 for the visitors.
Â
Columbia jumped on top with single runs in the second and third innings, but it was all Green Wave the rest of the way. In the fourth inning, right fielder Teo Banks scored third baseman Brayden Morrow with a single to right and, later, Engelhard came home on an RBI groundout by shortstop Gavin Schulz.
Â
In the fifth, designated hitter Jackson Linn and first baseman Brady Marget both came around to score on a Columbia misplay off Morrow's at-bat.
Â
Pinch-hitter Simon Baumgardt scored left fielder Jake LaPrairie with a single to left in the seventh for the game's final margin.
Â
Tulane bounced back with its plate discipline Saturday, striking out just four times, one night after fanning 17 times against the Lions' pitching staff in the series' first matchup.
Â
With his performance Saturday, the Olive and Blue's Lombardi lowered his ERA to 0.77 and has allowed just a .125 batting average against in 11 and two-thirds innings.
Â
