Late-Inning Trojan Offense Carries the Day Against Green Wave
Mar 5, 2023 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES, CA – Tulane's baseball team jumped out to an early 4-1 lead on Saturday, but in the end, couldn't hold off USC as the Trojans won 13-8 at Dedeaux Field.Â
Â
USC is now 5-4-1 in 2023, while the Green Wave, despite hitting four home runs, fell to 1-10.
Â
Jason Starrels (1-0) got the win in relief for the home team, getting USC out of a jam-packed fifth inning. He gave up two runs on three hits in two and one-third innings.
Â
Tulane used five pitchers with starter Cristian Sanchez (0-3) suffering the loss in his third start. He gave up seven runs (five earned) on five hits and one walk and two hit batters in two and one-thirds innings of work.
Â
USC center fielder Austin Overn, shortstop Ryan Jackson and right fielder Cole Gabrielson (three-run homer) posted 10 of the team's 12 RBI, while designated hitter Nick Lopez and catcher Conor Clift had three hits apiece.Â
Â
Green Wave catcher Brennan Lambert and left fielder Jackson Linn each had two hits and designated hitter Chase Engelhard drove in two.
Â
Tulane jumped to a 4-1 lead after second-inning RBI singles by right fielder Jacob LaPrairie and second baseman Michael Lombardi were sandwiched around third baseman Simon Baumgardt scoring on a USC failed pickoff attempt. Linn added a solo homer to left, his fourth round-tripper of the season, in the third inning.
Â
USC, though, exploded for seven runs in the bottom half of that frame and added three more in the fifth inning to go with one each in the seventh and eighth.
Â
The Green Wave played the long ball in the fifth, with a solo shot by Lambert and a two-run blast by Engelhard.
Â
Finally, pinch-hitter Teo Banks crushed the first eighth-inning pitch he saw over the wall in left for his first homer of the season.
Â
Tulane and Sacramento State will round out the weekend at Jackie Robinson Stadium in a game set for noon CT. The Hornets are 6-3 season after losing 8-7 to USC on Friday and 3-2 to No. 12 UCLA on Saturday.
