Tulane’s Ninth-Inning Rally Falls Just Short
Apr 4, 2023 | Baseball
LAFAYETTE, LA – Louisiana center fielder Heath Hood scored on a Tulane wild pitch to give the host Ragin' Cajuns an 8-7 walkoff victory Tuesday evening at Russo Park in Lafayette.
Hood slid into home just ahead of the tag by Green Wave pitcher Michael Fowler, though the play was reviewed by the umpiring crew. The original call was then upheld.
Louisiana moved to 20-9 overall with the win, while Tulane fell to 8-21.
That moment came on the heels of a stirring rally by the visitors, which saw them tie the game at 7-apiece with six runs in the top half of the ninth inning.
Ragin' Cajuns reliever Ben Tate (1-1) was given the win after he got the last Green Wave out. Tate gave up one hit and was responsible for the tying run.
Tulane's Billy Price (0-1) was tagged with the loss, after he allowed a run on two hits.
A combined 16 pitchers took the mound between both teams.
Louisiana first baseman CJ Willis connected on a three-run blast in the fifth inning and walked three times. Shortstop John Taylor went 3-for-3 at the plate. Willis and Hood scored twice.
The Olive and Blue's first baseman Brady Marget put his team on top early after he scored on a bases loaded walk in the top of the first inning by third baseman Simon Baumgardt. Marget reached base on a double that was his seventh of the season, a total that is tied for the team lead with Brady Hebert.
Louisiana then rattled off the game's next seven runs with three in the third, three in the fifth and one in the sixth.
Tulane's bats were kept silent until the ninth. Jackson Linn was inserted as a pinch hitter and came up big with a two-run shot to left to make it 7-3 Ragin' Cajuns. Another pinch-hitter, Adam Ebling, then reduced the deficit by one more with a single up the middle that plated Chase Engelhard. That set the stage for a game-tying three-run homer by designated hitter Brayden Morrow to right. In total, Tulane sent five pinch-hitters to the plate in the frame.
In the bottom half of the inning, Hood led off with a double to left and was sacrificed over to third before scoring the game-winner.
Linn's homer was his sixth of 2023, a total that is tops on the team.
Tulane will now travel to Tampa to play at USF for a three-game series on Thursday (5:30 p.m. CT), Friday (5:30) and Saturday (12). The Bulls are 12-18 this season and 2-1 in the conference after taking two of three at UCF last weekend.
