
Volleyball Sweeps Jackson State in their 2023 Season Opener

The Tulane Green Wave volleyball team picked up their first win of the season and 900thย program win in their season opener against Jackson State on Friday afternoon. The game was played in Mobile, Alabama at the Jaguar Classic.

Tulane played a dominate game in all three sets, besting the Tigers by nine or more points in each set (25-13, 25-15, 25-16).ย

The Green Wave had 32 total kills and 20 total blocks in the match.ย

Leading the way offensively for Tulane was freshman outside hitter, Avery Burks. Burks had eight total kills in the match. Following closely behind, was sophomore middle blocker, Sabrina Skyers. Skyers had seven total kills with a .583 hitting percentage. Middle blockers Agata Beksha and Orsula Staka six had kills apiece to add to the Green Wave victory.

Setter, Laura Fiabane, made her presence known right away offensively. The transfer added 26 total assists to the Tulane victory.ย

Another transfer, Lauryn Burrows, along with Burks, led the defensive play for the Green Wave. Each had 15 digs a piece.ย

Staka, played a dominate match at middle blocker and led the Green Wave in blocks. Sheย added seven blocks in the match.ย

The Jaguars could never contain the Green Wave's explosive play throughout the match. In the first set, after some back and forth, Tulane went on a 14-5 run besting Jackson State 25-14. Fiabane had eight assists setting up Tulane's 12 total kills.

The second set brought much of the same. With some close back in fourth, Tulane was able to find their rhythm and go on a 15-5 run to close the set. Fiabane had 10 assists to the Wave's 11 total kills. Staka also added four blocks to the set's dominance.ย

Jackson State kept up with the Green Wave longer in the third set, keeping it close at 14-12. However, Tulane's explosive play was too much for the Jaguars to contain. The Green Wave ended up taking the set in a dominant fashion 25-16.ย

The Green Wave has a chance to improve to 2-0 tomorrow when they take on Stephen F. Austin in day two of the Jaguar Classic. The game will be held at South Alabama University at 12:30PM.ย
