
Tulane Takes First and Second in Sugar Bowl Fleet Races

NEW ORLEANS – Tulane University sailing claimed the victory in the Sugar Bowl Open Fleet Race and finished second in the Sugar Bowl Women's Fleet Race on Sunday. Team Angry Wave secured the top spot for Tulane in the open races while team Green Wave finished second overall in the women's fleet races.

In the open fleet race, the Green Wave had three teams competing on the water to finish first, second, and fifth overall. Team Angry Wave took the top spot in the standings with 67 total points behind the low point duo of Hamilton Barclay and Claire Lewis with 23 points in the B Division and Kelly Holthus with Parker Kumler in the A Division. Zander King and Alex Makoid in the A Division with Matheo Capasso, Jack Solmo, Abigail Borggaard, and Caroline Caudron in the B Division helped Team Riptide finish second overall with 106 points. Team Green Wave landed in fifth with 131 points.

Over in the women's fleet race Team Green Wave finished second overall despite tying College of Charleston with 91 total points. Samantha Gardner and Andrea Riefkohl-Gonzalez were low point in the women's fleet race finishing with 17 points in the A Division for Team Green Wave. The duo of Mia Hanes and Ellie Spearman helped Team Green Wave finish second by posting 41 points in the B Division. Tulane also claimed third and fourth overall as Team Angry Wave finished with 107 points and Team Riptide finished with 118 points. Rounding out the teams for Tulane was Team Roll Wave with 196 points in sixth place overall.

Up next, Tulane will send its women's team to St. Mary's City, Maryland, to compete in the Women's ACC Semifinals while the coed squad will travel to New London, Connecticut, for the Danmark Trophy Open Fleet Race. Both regattas will be held Saturday and Sunday, September 30-October 1.
