
Women’s Basketball Plays A Pair of Conference Games This Week Starting Against Charlotte on Wednesday

New Orleans, Louisiana – Tulane's women's basketball team (8-7, 1-3 AAC) looks to stay on the winning track with a pair of conference games this week. The program first travels to take on Charlotte (11-6, 4-1 AAC) on Wednesday, Jan. 17, at 5:30 p.m. at Halton Arena. The team then returns home to host Rice (9-6, 3-1 AAC) on Saturday, Jan. 20, at 2 p.m. at Devlin Fieldhouse. All the Tulane games will be shown live on ESPN+ while Paul Boron has the radio calls on 88.3 FM or the Varsity Network App.
Last time out, Tulane put together a dominate effort in securing an 81-55 victory over East Carolina on Jan. 13 at Devlin Fieldhouse. Hannah Pratt's near record breaking shooting performance led the program. Pratt hit eight threes in the game to rank just below Tiffany Aidoo's nine threes in the school record book. Pratt's eight threes were the most for the program in a game since 2013. Pratt's 26 points scored were tied for the most by a Tulane player this season. Amira Mabry recorded her first career double-double with 14 points and career-best 11 rebounds. Irina Parau set a new career-best with seven assists. Joy Madison-Key tied for career-high eight points along with a career-best seven assists. The team's 26-point victory was the largest conference win for Tulane since the 2021 season when the team defeated Temple 80-44. The 25+ point victory was the third such win for Tulane this season. The team's 13 made threes against the Pirates are tied for the fourth-most in school history. The victory was the 650th in the career of Coach Stockton. She is just the 14th active coach to ever reach the mark and the 35th coach ever at the Division I for women's basketball.
Pratt became the third different Tulane player to be recognized by the AAC this season as she was named to the Weekly Honor Roll after averaging 26 points and seven rebounds a game. She shot 52.9 percent from the field and 53.3 percent from three-point range on the week plus hit eight threes and had seven rebounds. Previously honored was Kyren Whittington (Nov. 20 and Dec. 11) and Marta Galic (Dec. 26).
Charlotte, under the direction of Cara Consegura, are in their first year as part of the American Athletic Conference (AAC). The program has started well with 11 wins in the first 17 games and four conference wins. Dazia Lawrence leads the team with 18.2 points per game. Lawrence also has a team-high 31 steals. Tracey Hueston is also averaging in double figures at 13.1 points a game.
Rice, who are coached by Lindsay Edmonds, are in their first year as part of the AAC. The team has won four of the last six games including a 67-64 victory over USF on Jan. 14. Dominique Ennis leads the Owls with her average of 13.1 points per game. Malia Fisher sports averages of 11.2 points and 7.2 rebounds per game. Destiny Jackson is also averaging in double figures at 10 points and leads the team with 40 assists.
Tulane leads the all-time series with Charlotte 15-9. The 49ers won the first game of the series in 1992 by a 63-41 margin and won the last time the team met in 2019 by a 60-56 score. The 49ers have won four of the last five games of the series over Tulane. The longest streak of the series with 12 straight victories for Tulane from 1995-2002.
The Green Wave leads Rice in the series 17-12. Tulane won the first game of the series 73-53 in 1980. The Green Wave earned the 62-55 victory over Rice in the last game of the series in 2014. Tulane has won the last four games of the series.
The Green Wave, under the leadership of Coach Stockton, were picked for sixth in the American Athletic Conference (AAC) this season. The team went 18-14 last year and had a mark of 7-9 in AAC play. Coach Stockton is in her 30th year at the helm of Tulane. The program returns eight players from last season's roster for the 2023-24 season including 2023 American Athletic Conference All-Tournament Team selection Kyren Whittington. The Green Wave have added two freshmen, center Lily Ba and point guard Joy Madison-Key, along with graduate transfer forward Hannah Pratt and graduate transfer guard Kaylah Rainey. Last season, Tulane was selected for a WNIT post season appearance for the third consecutive year. Coach Stockton also became the all-time winningest women's basketball coach in the state of Louisiana during the campaign and was elected to the CUSA Hall of Fame over the summer. The team's top returner scorers from last season are Kyren Whittington and Marta Galic. Both averaged 11.9 points per game. Galic also led the team in rebounding a year ago with her average of 6.7 rebounds a game.
After this week's games, Tulane travels to North Texas on Jan. 24 for a 6:30 p.m. tip and then returns home to host Temple on Jan. 28 at 2 p.m. at Devlin Fieldhouse.
