Women’s Basketball Falls to Rice, 61-44, on Saturday

NEW ORLEANS – Amira Mabry led a pair of players in double figures for Tulane's women's basketball team (8-9, 1-5 AAC) in a 61-44 loss to Rice (11-6, 5-1 AAC) on Saturday at home at Devlin Fieldhouse.
Mabry shot 6-for-15 from the field with a made three pointer. She also had a team-high seven rebounds along with an assist. Irina Parau totaled 13 points plus four rebounds and two assists. Marta Galic tallied nine points, four rebounds and two assists. Chiara Grattini totaled a pair of points and an assist. Kaylah Rainey had an active game with three points, two rebounds and tied for the team lead with five assists. Joy Madison-Key also had five assists plus a pair of steals. Hannah Pratt totaled three points, two rebounds and an assist.
Rice was led by 16 points from Dominique Ennis. Destiny Jackson and Malia Fisher also reached double figures with 14 points each. Fisher also had five steals on the afternoon.
Tulane's largest lead was three points early in the first quarter, 7-4. The game featured three lead changes and one tied score. The Green Wave shot 33.9 percent from the field (19-for-56), 22.2 percent from three-point range (4-for-18) and 100 percent from the line (2-for-2). The program also had 27 rebounds, 17 assists and four steals. The Green Wave controlled the paint 28-18 and second chance points 13-4.
Rice shot 49 percent from the field (24-for-49), 35.3 percent from three-point range (6-for-17) and 77.8 percent from the line (7-for-9). The Owls totaled 33 rebounds, 14 assists, seven steals and two blocks. Rice held a 14-11 lead in points off turnovers and 11-3 scoring advantage off the bench. Rice's largest lead was 18 points midway through the third quarter, 41-23.
Rice held a 23-14 lead after the first quarter, extended the lead to 32-21 at the break and led 50-35 after the third quarter. Tulane put together a rally midway through the fourth that whittled the lead down to eight twice including 52-44 on the Parau layup with 5:54 remaining in the game before seeing the Owls end the game on a 9-0 run to win this one 61-44.
Next, Tulane heads back on the road and travels to Denton, Texas to take on North Texas on Jan. 24 at 6:30 p.m.
Notables:
The loss dropped Tulane's record to 17-13 all-time against Rice in the first meeting between the schools since 2014…The Green Wave came into the game on a four-game winning streak over the Owls…This was Rice's first win at Tulane since 2011 and first win over Tulane at all since 2012…Lisa Stockton is now 12-8 all-time against Rice…Tulane's two free throw attempts were the lowest number for the program since also only having two attempts against Memphis during the 2017 season…Amira Mabry's double figure performance of 14 points was her eighth of the season…Mabry led the team in rebounding for the eighth time this season….The game was the second straight game that Mabry has led the team in scoring and rebounding…Irina Parau's 13 points was her sixth time in double figures on campaign, but the first time since Dec. 6 against UNO…Marta Galic was held below double figures for the first time in the last 12 games…The team's 44 points were a season-low on the year (54 against Tulsa – 1/2/24 were the previous low)…The team's four steals also tied for season low for the program…The home loss was only the third of the season for Tulane in 10 games.
