Tulane Drops Heartbreaker to Wyoming in Cancun
Nov 26, 2024 | Men's Basketball
CANCUN, Mexico– A three-pointer in the final minute from Wyoming (5-1) handed Tulane men's basketball (4-3) its second-straight loss in heartbreak fashion 63-64 in the first round of the Cancun Challenge at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya. The Wave had a shot to reclaim the lead in the closing moments, but the wing three-point attempt from Kam Williams fell just short.
With the loss, the Green Wave move on to play the loser of the matchup between Belmont and Loyola Marymount on Wednesday.
All five starters tallied double figures in scoring for the Wave led by 15 from Asher Woods. Making his second start of the season Woods recorded his third game with double-digit points and added a pair of assists. Rowan Brumbaugh and Williams each added 13 points while Kaleb Banks and Gregg Glenn III both ended with 11. Williams also matched his career best with four steals and Banks recorded his fourth double-double of the season pulling down 10 boards.
The Cowboys were led by four different players in double figures Tuesday night. Obi Agbim led all scorers with 18 points on 5-of-14 shooting.
Defensively, Tulane held the Cowboys to just 18.2 percent shooting from beyond the arc and managed to turn nine Wyoming turnovers into 16 points.
The Green Wave and the Cowboys traded baskets over the first few minutes of the contest until back-to-back threes from Woods and Brumbaugh sparked a 12-0 run to put Tulane up 17-7. Wyoming answered back eventually taking its largest lead of the night at 34-31 over the Wave with 2:28 remaining in the half. Tulane closed the first half with the final nine points before hitting the locker room holding a 40-34 advantage.
Tulane extended its lead out to 16 points at 52-36 just over six minutes into the second half. However, the Cowboys did not go away quietly cutting the Wave's advantage to 52-48 at the under eight media timeout.
Another response was mounted by the Green Wave to push the lead quickly back to nine points. That advantage was short-lived as Wyoming fought back to tie the game at 61 with under a minute to play.
Woods knocked down a tough pull up jumper just outside the paint to put Tulane back in front with 28 seconds remaining. Unfortunately, Wyoming managed to find an open shooter in the corner on the next possession for a three-pointer to put the Wave down by one with nine seconds left. Tulane got one more shot to reclaim the lead and win the game, but a contested three from Williams fell just short as the Green Wave ultimately lost 63-64.
Up next, the Tulane face either Belmont or Loyola Marymount on Wednesday, November 27. The game will be aired on CBS Sports Network at 5 p.m. CT.
