Green Wave Falls to Belmont in Cancun Challenge
Nov 27, 2024 | Men's Basketball
CANCUN, Mexico – Tulane men's basketball (4-4) was unable to keep pace with the three-point shooting by Belmont (5-2) dropping its second game in the Cancun Challenge and its third-straight contest 66-89 on Wednesday night. The Green Wave held a seven-point lead in the first half, but the Bruins got hot from beyond the arc to pull in front and not look back by hitting 18 three-pointers in the game.
With the loss, the Green Wave has now lost three-straight games for the first time this season. The Wave also moves to 0-3 outside of Uptown on the year.
Asher Woods led three players for Tulane to score in double figures against Belmont. Woods finished the night with 16 points on 5-of-10 shooting including a pair of threes. Rowan Brumbaugh and Mari Jordan each tallied 13 points for the Green Wave. Meanwhile, Spencer Elliott and KJ Greene each added career-highs with six points and three points, respectively.
The Bruins finished with five players in double figures led by Tyler Lundblade with 17 points including five made threes. His five three-pointer led the charge for Belmont to shoot 18-of-42 from downtown as a team.
After Belmont found the scoreboard first to open the contest, Tulane responded quickly to take the lead. The Green Wave built its largest advantage of the night at 19-12 with 14 minutes to play in the half. However, the Bruins mounted a 9-2 run to tie the game before taking a double-digit lead with under four minutes to play. Tulane knocked it back under 10 points twice, but eventually hit the half trailing 35-45.
In the second half, the Green Wave was unable to build any momentum to mount a comeback against the Bruins. Belmont extended its lead to as many as 29 points in the second half. Ultimately, the Wave lost by a final score of 66-89.
Up next, Tulane returns to New Orleans to host Southeastern Louisiana on Monday, December 2. The contest between the Wave and the Lions is set for 6:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
