CHARLOTTE, N.C. – An 18-2 run to open the game set the tone for Tulane men's basketball (7-7, 1-0) to defeat Charlotte (7-7, 0-1) 83-68 in Halton Arena Tuesday afternoon. The Green Wave held the 49ers to just 26.1 percent shooting from beyond the arc to record its second consecutive victory in conference openers.
With the victory, Tulane begins league play 1-0 for the second-straight season and the third time under Head Coach Ron Hunter. The win also marked the Wave's first road win of the season and snapped a 13-game losing streak away from New Orleans.
Defensively, the Green Wave matched a season-high swiping 13 steals against the 49ers while forcing Charlotte into 17 total turnovers. Tulane converted those takeaways into 21 points including 12 fast break points.
On the offensive end all five starters for the Wave scored in double figures with Kaleb Banks leading all scorers with 21 points. The junior forward has tallied double-digit points in 12 of his 13 games this season including six games with at least 20 points. Rowan Brumbaugh followed with his 10th consecutive game in double figures finishing with 19 points to go with three assists and three steals.
Asher Woods returned to the starting lineup Tuesday and posted 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting to go with a pair of steals. Rounding out the leaders for the Green Wave were Kam Williams with 13 points and Gregg Glenn III with 10 points, five assists, and a career-high four steals.
Tulane started the contest hot scoring the first 10 points on its way to an 18-4 run in the opening seven-plus minutes. Charlotte answered with the next nine points before both teams began exchanging buckets the remainder of the first half. Banks hit back-to-back threes to close the scoring for Tulane in the opening frame and give the Wave a 34-27 lead at the break.
In the second half the Green Wave managed to push its advantage back out to double figures leading by as many as 15 points with 12:07 to play. Tulane kept its distance against the 49ers over the next several minutes until Charlotte made one last push to cut the lead to 64-56 with under five minutes remaining.
The Wave responded once again to extend the lead back to double digits. The advantage reached 17 points in the closing minutes of the contest as Tulane took care of business at the free throw line before ultimately claiming the 83-68 road victory to open conference play.
