Wave Welcomes UTSA for Home Conference Opener Saturday

NEW ORLEANS – Tulane University men's basketball returns to the friendly confines of Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse on Saturday to host UTSA for its first home American Athletic Conference contest of the season. The Green Wave has not opened league play 2-0 since the 2021-22 campaign when the Wave defeated Memphis and Cincinnati to begin its conference schedule.

The matchup between the Wave and the Roadrunners is set to tipoff at 5 p.m. on ESPNU. Fans can also listen to the action live on the Tulane Sports Network from Learfield on 106.1 The Ticket and Heaven 106.7 with the voice of the Green Wave Corey Gloor or streaming on the Tulane Athletics App and The Varsity Network App.

This marks the fifth all-time meeting between Tulane and UTSA with the Green Wave leading the series 3-1. The Roadrunners won the lone meeting between the conference foes last season 89-88 on January 24 in San Antonio. The last time the Wave defeated UTSA came at home on February 22, 2024, by a final score of 68-56. Tulane has never lost to the Roadrunners in Uptown holding a 2-0 record at home in the series.

The Green Wave is 6-2 so far this season at home this season including wins in each of the last two. Tulane is averaging 81.4 points per game on 44.7 percent shooting from the field in Uptown. Kaleb Banks leads the Wave in home contests this season averaging 19.3 points and 8.9 rebounds.

In its last time out, Tulane opened American Athletic Conference competition with an 83-68 victory on the road over Charlotte on December 31. The win marked the second consecutive season the Green Wave began league play with a victory and snapped a 13-game losing streak away from New Orleans. All five starters scored in double figures for the Wave in the win as Banks led all scorers with 21 points to record his sixth game with at least 20 points this season.

UTSA enter the matchup with a 6-6 record after closing non-conference play with a 75-78 loss at Army on December 29. The Roadrunners lead The American in free throw percentage (.824), steals per game (10.4), three pointers per game (9.6), and turnovers forced per game (16.33). The team also rates in the top five nationally in free throw percentage ranking 3rd and steals ranking 5th.

Senior Primo Spears leads the Roadrunners and the conference in scoring averaging 22.25 points per game. Three more players average double figures for UTSA including Tai'Reon Joseph with 13.5, Marcus Millender and Damari Monsanto each at 11.1 points per game.

Following the matchup at UTSA, the Green Wave will visit UABÂ in Birmingham on Tuesday, January 7. The game between Tulane and the Blazers is set to tipoff at 6:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
