Wave Comeback Falls Short in Irvine Series Opener
Feb 23, 2024 | Baseball
NEW ORLEANS – UC Irvine got all of its runs in a wild fourth inning and ultimately hung on for a 5-4 victory over host Tulane Friday evening on Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
Â
The win kept the Anteaters unbeaten at 4-0, while the Green Wave saw its three-game winning streak halted and is now 3-2.
Â
UCI starter Nick Pinto (2-0) got the win after allowing one run on five hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Ricky Tibbert got the visitors' last five outs and for his first save after giving up two hits and striking out one.
Â
Tulane starter Jake Saum (0-2) took the defeat and his final stat line yielded a plethroa of threes (innings pitched, runs, walks and strikeouts) with two hit batters. He did not allow a hit.
Â
Anteater second baseman Will Bermudez drove in two runs on the evening.
Â
Meanwhile, Tulane second baseman Connor Rasmussen blasted his second home run with a second-inning shot over the wall in right center. He also scored three runs.
Â
First baseman Brady Marget and right fielder Brock Slaton also recorded two hits to go with left fielder Gavin Schulz's pair of RBI groundouts.
Â
Tulane climbed back into the contest with two runs in the eighth, the latter coming on a double down the left field line by Jackson Linn to score Slaton. That made the proceedings a one-run affair heading to the ninth.
Â
In the bottom half, the Wave could muster just a single through the left side by catcher Colin Tuft as Tibbert applied the finishing touches for the Anteaters.
Â
Three of UCI's four hits for the game came in that fourth inning, a frame that saw Tulane also issue three walks, two hit batters and an outfield error.
Â
The second game of the series is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday.
