Women’s Basketball Falls 54-44 On Senior Day To Memphis

NEW ORLEANS – Amira Mabry led the Tulane women's basketball team (10-16, 3-12 AAC) with 14 points in a 54-44 home loss on the Senior Day to Memphis (11-15, 7-8 AAC) on Saturday at Devlin Fieldhouse. The loss was the season-high fifth consecutive defeat for the program.
Mabry shot 5-for-10 from the field and 4-for-4 from the free throw line in scoring her 14 points. She also had four rebounds and a block. Marta Galic also reached double figures with 12 points. She chipped in with six rebounds, a block and a pair of assists. Kyren Whittington totaled eight points and led the team with seven rebounds. She also tied for the team lead with three steals. Hannah Pratt recorded eight points, two rebounds and a block. Kaylah Rainey totaled two points, two assists and three steals. Irina Parau totaled five rebounds and a steal.
Memphis had a pair of players in double figures and were led by 15 points from Madison Griggs. Griggs also had four steals. Kai Carter tallied 11 points and added six rebounds.
Tulane trailed the entire game as the game featured no lead changes or tied scores. The team shot 36.2 percent from the field (17-for-47), 27.8 percent from three-point range (5-for-18) and were perfect from the free throw line (5-for-5). The Green Wave totaled 38 rebounds, 11 assists, eight steals and five blocks. Tulane trailed in points off turnovers (14-12), points in the paint (20-18), second chance points (6-5), fast break points (10-5) and bench points (15-8). The program also turned the ball over 27 times.
Memphis shot 38.5 percent from the field (20-for-52), 33.3 percent from beyond the arc (5-for-15) and 64.3 percent from the free throw line (9-for-14). The Tigers recorded 32 rebounds, six assists, 14 steals and two blocks.
Memphis' largest lead was 16 points early in the third quarter, 33-17. The game got as tight as three points in the fourth quarter, 47-44, after a made three from Galic. That was as close as Tulane would get as they were outscored 7-0 over the last 7:04 of the game.
Memphis led after the first quarter by a 19-10 score. The Tigers extended the lead to 29-17 at the half. The third quarter saw the Green Wave put up 20 points to climb back into the game and trail by only seven, 44-37, heading to the fourth. The fourth quarter was close early, but Memphis was able to pull away with a 7-0 spurt over the final seven minutes of the game for a 54-44 victory.
Next, Tulane gets on the road and heads to Florida to play a pair of contests. The program takes on Florida Atlantic on Wednesday, Feb. 28, at 6 p.m. and then USF on Saturday, March 2, at 6 p.m.
