Tulane Run-Rules Yale in Series Opener

NEW ORLEANS – The Tulane baseball team took the lead from visiting Yale with two runs in the fourth inning and never looked back as it piled up four runs each in the sixth and eighth frames to win 11-1 in a game that was shortened by run-rule.

The Green Wave improved to 5-4 overall in the series opener between the two schools. The Bulldogs dropped to 0-4.

Tulane reliever Billy Price (1-0) got the victory in relief of starter Carter Benbrook. Price hurled three innings and gave up just two walks with two strikeouts.Â
Â
Yale starter Daniel Cohen (0-1) pitched into the sixth inning but gave up five runs (four earned) on six hits with four strikeouts and one walk.
Â
Tulane's middle infield of second baseman Connor Rasmussen and shortstop Marcus Cline did significant damage at the plate as they combined to go 4-for-6 with five RBI and three runs scored. Cline had the game's biggest hit with a bases-clearing triple to center in the sixth inning. First baseman Brady Marget also had two RBI and center fielder Teo Banks scored twice.

All three of Yale's hits were singles, with the Bulldogs' lone run coming on an RBI by third baseman Davis Hanson.

Tulane also benefited from three sacrifice flies to right field off the bat of catcher Colin Tuft (fourth inning), third baseman Gavin Schulz (sixth) and Matthias Haas (seventh).

The game ended on Rasmussen's run-scoring single to left sending pinch-runner Adam Ebling to the plate.
Â
Both teams combined for 15 walks.

The second game of the series will be Saturday at 2 p.m. on Greer Field inside Turchin Stadium.
