
Women’s Basketball Loses Heartbreaker to South Florida, 53-51

Tampa, Florida – Tulane's women's basketball team (10-18, 3-14 AAC) lost a heartbreaker to South Florida (17-13, 9-8 AAC) as the Bulls hit the go-ahead jumper in the final six seconds to take the game 53-51 on Saturday in Tampa at the Yuengling Center. The loss was the seventh straight for the Green Wave.
The shot hit by USF's Romi Levy came with just 5.4 second remaining in the game after Tulane had just tied the game up at 51 all on a three from Marta Galic.
Kyren Whittington led the team with 22 points. She also had four rebounds plus three steals. Amira Mabry also reached double figures with 13 points. She also tied for the team lead with seven rebounds. Galic tallied nine points and seven rebounds. Irina Parau totaled four points and four rebounds. Chiara Grattini picked up three points and a team-leading five assists. Kaylah Rainey had an assist and a rebound.
South Florida was led by 21 points from Levy. She also led the team with eight rebounds. Maria Alvarez also reached double figures with 10 points.
The game featured six lead changes and five tied scores. Tulane shot 42.6 percent from the field (20-for-47), 19 percent from three-point range (4-for-21) and 87.5 percent from the free throw line. The team totaled 31 rebounds, 10 assists and four steals.
South Florida shot 38.5 percent from the field (20-for-52), 30.4 percent from three-point range (7-for-23) and 75 percent from the free throw line. The Bulls had 27 rebounds, 10 assists, six steals and four blocks.
Tulane led 12-10 after the first 10 minutes of action in the first quarter. The Green Wave played even stronger in the second quarter in outscoring USF by a 21-15 margin to take the 33-25 advantage into the break. The third quarter saw the Bulls outscore Tulane 14-8 to tie the game at 39. USF held a slight 14-12 advantage in the fourth quarter to win this one 53-51.
Next, Tulane returns home to wrap-up the regular season by hosting Tulsa on March 5 at 6 p.m. at Devlin Fieldhouse.
