Last time out, Tulane lost a heartbreaker to South Florida on the road by a 53-51 margin for the team's seventh straight loss. The losing streak in the longest for the program since the 2020 campaign when the team also lost seven straight contests. The team tied the game up at 51 on a made three from Marta Galic but USF knocked down a jumper with under six seconds remaining to win the game. Kyren Whittington led the team in scoring with a game-high 22 points. It was her seventh game with 20 or more points in a game this season. Also reaching double figures for the 14th straight game was Amira Mabry. Mabry totaled 11 points and seven rebounds in the loss to the Bulls.
Tulsa is coached by Angie Nelp. She is in her third year in charge of the program. The Hurricane have won four games in a row including a 91-73 victory over SMU over the weekend. Tulsa is led by dynamic scoring duo of Temira Poindexter and Delanie Crawford. Poindexter is averaging 20.8 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. Crawford sports averages of 19.4 points and 5.7 rebounds a contest.
Tulane leads the all-time series with Tulsa 28-10. The first game of the series was a 49-44 victory for Tulane in 1987. The Green Wave lost 72-54 earlier this season. The win snapped Tulane's eight game winning streak over the Hurricane. Temira Poindexter totaled 24 points for Tulsa in January, while Tulane was led by Marta Galic's 12 points.
The Green Wave, under the leadership of Coach Stockton, were picked for sixth in the American Athletic Conference (AAC) this season. The team went 18-14 last year and had a mark of 7-9 in AAC play. Coach Stockton is in her 30th year at the helm of Tulane. The program returns eight players from last season's roster for the 2023-24 season including 2023 American Athletic Conference All-Tournament Team selection Kyren Whittington. The Green Wave have added two freshmen, center Lily Ba and point guard Joy Madison-Key, along with graduate transfer forward Hannah Pratt and graduate transfer guard Kaylah Rainey. Last season, Tulane was selected for a WNIT post season appearance for the third consecutive year. Coach Stockton also became the all-time winningest women's basketball coach in the state of Louisiana during the campaign and was elected to the CUSA Hall of Fame over the summer. The team's top returner scorers from last season are Kyren Whittington and Marta Galic. Both averaged 11.9 points per game. Galic also led the team in rebounding a year ago with her average of 6.7 rebounds a game.
After this week's regular season finale, Tulane plays in the AAC Women's Basketball Tournament starting on Saturday, March 9, at 6 p.m. against a yet to be determined opponent. The Green Wave will enter the single elimination tournament as the No. 14 seed and will square off with the No. 11 seed in the second game of the opening day in Fort Worth, Texas at Dickies Arena in a game that will also be shown live on ESPN+.
