HATTIESBURG, MS – The host Southern Miss baseball team scored seven of its nine runs from the fifth inning on to claim a 9-4 win over visiting Tulane Tuesday evening at Pete Taylor Park in non-conference action.
The victory vaulted the Golden Eagles to 16-9 overall, while the Green Wave dipped to 15-10.
USM right fielder Carson Paetow went 3-for-4 with three RBI, including a solo homer in the second inning. Designated hitter Slade Wilks, second baseman Nick Monistere and catcher Lawson Odom also drove in two runs apiece.
For Tulane, right fielder Brock Slaton (fifth inning) and center fielder Teo Banks (eighth) both had two-run homers.
Golden Eagles reliever JW Armistead (1-1) got the win, allowing two runs on two hits with one strikeout in one inning of work.
Green Wave starter Michael Lombardi (1-2) went four and one-third innings, giving up three runs on four hits with five strikeouts and four walks in a losing effort.
USM posted single runs in the first and third innings before Slaton's fifth-inning bomb that skipped off the leaping glove of Paetow knotted the score at 2-all.
The home team went to work in the bottom half, posting four runs, then one in the sixth and two in the seventh. The Banks homer, which was his team-leading sixth of the season, accounted for the game's final margin.
A combined 13 pitchers took the mound on Tuesday. Both teams struck out eight batters, but Tulane issued six walks compared to two by USM.
The Green Wave will step back into American Athletic Conference action on Thursday when UTSA (13-12) visits Greer Field at Turchin Stadium for a three-game series. The Thursday and Friday games start at 6:30, while Saturday's series finale will be at noon.
Like Tulane, the Roadrunners are 2-1 in league play following its series win over ECU last weekend. UTSA will be coming to NOLA off a victory after going to Baylor and knocking off the Bears 9-7 Tuesday evening.
