Wave Rallies in Wild Ninth Inning to Take FAU Series
Apr 21, 2024 | Baseball
Â
Both teams finished the game at 7-8 in the American Athletic Conference. Tulane is now 22-18, while Florida Atlantic fell to 20-17.
Â
All of Tulane's runs came with two outs.
Â
Eight different players recorded hits and scored runs for the Olive and Blue. Shortstop Marcus Cline had two hits and center fielder Teo Banks drilled his team-leading 10th home run of the season, a two-run shot that got the scoring started in the final frame.Â
Â
FAU got homers from catcher Andrew McKenna and first baseman Emilio Gonzalez. McKenna's blast staked the home team to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, while Gonzalez smoked a three-run shot over the right field wall in the fifth. Second baseman Christian Adams went 2-for-3.
Â
The Tulane rally made a winner of reliever Henry Shuffler (4-0), who pitched a clean eighth inning. He, along with fellow relievers Michael Lombardi and Jacob Moore, held the Owls without so much as a hit over the last four innings.Â
Â
Steven Andrews (3-1) suffered the loss for the Owls, giving up four runs (two earned) on three hits with one strikeout and no walks.Â
Â
Andrews was on the mound for the game's biggest moment, a misplayed grounder by Adams with two outs in the ninth that allowed Cline to score, tying the game at 5. Left fielder Gavin Schulz, designated hitter Michael Lombardi, left fielder Ben Romano and right fielder Brock Slaton all followed with RBI to give Moore the necessary cushion for the bottom of the ninth.
Â
Banks and first baseman Brady Marget now share the team's RBI lead at 32. Marget (0-for-2) saw his 11-game hitting streak come to an end but his three walks extended his on-base stretch to 16 consecutive contests.
Â
The Green Wave returns home to face Southern Miss Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. on Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.Â
