Â
With the win, the Green Wave improved to 23-19 overall and evened its American Athletic Conference mark to 8-8. The Shockers fell a game below .500 to 21-22 and saw its league mark drop to 7-9.
Â
The Tulane quartet of first baseman Brady Marget, left fielder Gavin Schulz, center fielder Teo Banks and third baseman James Agabedis III went a combined 12-for-20 Friday with 10 RBI and nine runs scored. Schulz hit two homers, while Marget and Banks each had one.
Â
Catcher Colin Tuft drew also three walks and scored three times.
Â
For Wichita State, left fielder Derek Williams went 4-for-5 with two homers himself to go with three RBI and three runs scored. Shortstop Kam Durnin also recorded three hits in four at-bats.Â
Â
Green Wave starting pitcher Luc Fladda (2-3) had plenty of run support in the victory. He gave up six runs on 10 hits with four strikeouts and one walk. The Wave's relief corps took care of the rest, with Carter Benbrook (1.2 IP, four strikeouts) putting forth a dominant effort.
Â
Shockers starter Tyler Dobbs (5-4) was tagged with the loss, surrendering six runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and two walks. In all, seven pitchers took the hill for the home team.Â
Â
The Green Wave got four runs in the top of the fourth and led by as many as six (10-4) on Schulz's second homer of the contest in the top of the sixth.Â
Â
Wichita State closed the margin to 10-8 on Williams' second blast in the seventh, but Tulane responded with two RBI by Marget sandwiched around a Banks RBI double for the game's final margin.
Â
Tuft reached base five times despite facing two-strike counts each time.Â
Â
Agebedis has seven hits in his last two games.Â
Â
Benbrook has recorded six scoreless outings in his last seven relief appearances.
Â
The Green Wave is 16-1 this season when leading after the fifth inning.
Â
Rasmussen's reached base streak has reached 18 games.
Â
The second game of the series will now be played at 1 p.m. due to inclement weather in Wichita's forecast.
