Ninth Inning Rally Falls Short at UAB
Apr 7, 2024 | Baseball
The Blazers (14-17) clinched the series win and improved to 3-6 in the American Athletic Conference. The Wave enters next week with that same league mark and a 17-15 overall record.
UAB starting pitcher Colin Daniel (5-2) put forth a strong effort, scattering 11 hits and four runs over eight innings with eight strikeouts and two walks on a 120-pitch day. Ty Hutto picked up his first save of the season, despite a rocky ninth frame.
Tulane starter Michael Lombardi (2-3) took the defeat, giving up four runs on three hits with five strikeouts, four walks and two hit batters in two and two-thirds innings.
Blazers third baseman David Harris drove in three runs in a 2-for-2 effort. Left fielder Logan Braunschweig and shortstop Alex Cheeseman also had two hits. UAB designated hitter Brayton Brown capped off an impressive weekend by scoring twice. Only one of the Blazers' 10 hits went for extra bases (second inning double by Cheeseman).
Tulane, on the other hand, had five extra-base hits amongst its 15. First baseman Brady Marget (first inning) and shortstop Marcus Cline (sixth) had solo homers for the Wave. Also posting two hits apiece were second baseman Connor Rasmussen, right fielder Gavin Schulz, left fielder Jackson Linn and center fielder Teo Banks. Six different players scored a run.
The visitors found themselves in a 7-4 hole entering the ninth inning but Rasmussen and Schulz both doubled and Banks ripped a run-scoring single through the left side to cut the margin to one (7-6). However, Hutto got a groundout from third baseman James Agabedis III to end the threat and the game.
The Green Wave left the bases loaded three times and eight of their 12 LOBs for the game came in the seventh, eighth and ninth frames. UAB left eight runners on during the course of the game.
Tulane catcher Colin Tuft extended his on-base stretch to 24 consecutive games and his hitting streak to 16.
The double by Schulz was his team-leading 10th of the season.
The Olive and Blue will be back in action Tuesday when it heads across town to face UNO at Maestri Field. The Privateers will come into the game at 18-13 overall after dropping two of three at conference foe Houston Christian this weekend.
UNO fell 6-3 at Tulane back on February 27 in the first round of the Pelican Cup.
