Twice as Nice! Tulane Clinches Series Victory over ECU
May 12, 2024 | Baseball
NEW ORLEANS – Tulane right fielder Matthias Haas blasted two home runs and starting pitcher Chandler Welch put forth a strong effort as the host Green Wave won 7-3 on Saturday to clinch the series victory over sixth-ranked East Carolina. The game was played on Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
Â
The Olive and Blue (28-23 overall, 12-11 American Athletic Conference), by virtue of its victory, solidified a series win over its highest ranked opponent since April 1991 against No. 1 Florida State.
Â
The Pirates dropped to 37-12 and 16-7 in the league.
Â
Haas smoked a solo homer to left in the sixth inning and followed with a two-run shot to right center in the seventh for his fourth and fifth homers of the year, respectively. He also scored three times and swiped his second base of the season in the second inning.
Â
Left fielder Jackson Linn crushed his 10th homer of 2024 in the bottom of the eighth for an insurance tally. Second baseman Connor Rasmussen went 2-for-4 as well.
Â
ECU got two hits apiece from first baseman Carter Cunningham and second baseman Jacob Starling.
Â
Welch (6-3) pitched into the eighth inning, striking out six against one walk while scattering three runs on nine hits in seven and a third innings. Michael Lombardi then nailed down his first save of the season, getting the game's final five outs, which also featured three Ks.
Â
Pirate reliever Jaden Winter (2-2) suffered the loss.
Â
Catcher Colin Tuft (second inning), third baseman Gavin Schulz (third) and center fielder Teo Banks (sixth) also recorded RBI singles during the game.
Â
The series finale will be played at 1 p.m. on Sunday.Â
Â
The program will honor its 2024 seniors (Michael Fowler, Jake Saum, Nathan Rose, Marcus Cline, Reed Kellum and Billy Price) during short ceremonies throughout the first part of the game.
