Privateers Claim Comeback Victory over Green Wave
May 8, 2024 | Baseball
NEW ORLEANS – UNO surrendered five early runs but came back and defeated visiting Tulane 6-5 in 10 innings Tuesday evening on Maestri Field in the Green Wave's final midweek non-conference game of the season.
Â
UNO improved to 27-21 overall, while Tulane fell to 26-23.
Â
The Olive and Blue got all of its runs on two homers in the third frame via shots by left fielder Jackson Linn and first baseman Brady Marget. Both men drilled their ninth homers of the season, the latter being the team's second grand slam of 2024.
Â
The Privateers got a big three-run blast in the bottom of the eighth to climb back into the contest, courtesy of first baseman Bryce Calloway. Catcher Brady Prewitt also went 2-for-4 and right fielder Mitchell Sanford scored twice.
Â
The home team loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the ninth and tied the game at 5-all with a sac fly to right by third baseman Maika Niu.
Â
UNO then capitalized on Tulane's fourth error of the game in the bottom of the 10th as pinch runner Brady Drawbaugh raced home on the game-winning smash to right center by left fielder Alexander Saunier.
Â
Those heroics made a winner of Calloway (2-1), who hurled clean ninth and 10th innings. Green Wave reliever Tayler Montiel (0-1) was tagged with the loss as he put the game-winning run aboard with a leadoff walk.Â
Â
Tulane center fielder Teo Banks saw his streak of 18 games reaching base come to an end.
Â
Tuesday's outcome was only the second time this season that the Green Wave fell when leading after five innings.
Â
Tulane will be back in action this weekend when sixth-ranked East Carolina visits Greer Field at Turchin Stadium for a three-game series that is set to begin Friday at 6:30 p.m. The Pirates dropped a 5-2 decision to ninth-ranked Duke at home on Tuesday.
