Wave Gets Wild Walkoff Win over #6 ECU
May 11, 2024 | Baseball
NEW ORLEANS – East Carolina pitcher Wyatt Lunsford-Shenkman hit Tulane catcher Colin Tuft with a bases-loaded pitch in the bottom of the ninth inning, giving the host Green Wave a 6-5 win in Friday's series opener on Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
Â
The win vaulted Tulane to 27-23 overall and 11-11 in the American Athletic Conference. The loss dropped the Pirates to 37-11 and 16-6 in the league.
Â
Shenkman fell to 3-2 in the defeat, while Tulane reliever Jacob Moore (4-3) got the win. Moore came in and got the final out of the top of the ninth inning. It was part of a sterling effort by the Tulane bullpen (5.0 IP, 3H, 0R, 2 BB, 4 Ks), which also consisted of Carter Benbrook and Henry Shuffler.
Â
Tulane second baseman Connor Rasmussen, who began his career at East Carolina last season, went 3-for-5 with a three-run homer in the fourth inning that staked the Green Wave to a 5-1 lead.
Â
The other Tulane homer came off the bat of third baseman James Agabedis III, who gave the team its initial lead (2-1) with a two-run blast in the bottom of the second.
Â
Green Wave shortstop Marcus Cline scored twice and walked four times.
Â
ECU second baseman Jacob Starling went 3-for-5 with three RBI and center fielder Ryley Johnson posted a 2-for-5 effort. First baseman Carter Cunningham scored twice.
Â
All nine of the Pirates' hits were singles.
Â
With the score tied at 5 in the bottom of the eighth, Tulane loaded the bases but grounded into a double play with one out and the game moved on to the ninth inning.
Â
Green Wave third baseman Gavin Schulz nearly ended the game on the bottom of the ninth's fifth pitch when he tripled to the warning track in deep left. After designated hitter Michael Lombardi was hit by a pitch, ECU elected to intentionally walk Cline, setting the stage for the Tuft at-bat.
Â
The second game of the series will be played at 6:30 p.m. Tulane will recognize its 2024 graduates in a brief ceremony before the game.
