
Second Half Rally Falls Short for Tulane at Temple

PHILADELPHIA – After trailing by nine points with three minutes to play, Tulane men's basketball (10-9, 4-2) fought back to have a shot to tie the game as time expired but it fell short resulting in a 77-80 loss at Temple (12-6, 4-1) on Sunday. The Green Wave forced a turnover with 17 seconds to play to set up the opportunity to tie the contest, however, the Wave had to settle for a contest three-pointer from Rowan Brumbaugh that did not fall.
With the loss, Tulane fell to 1-4 in true road contests this season including 1-2 in American Athletic Conference play. The Wave also dropped to 1-7 on the year outside of New Orleans.
Brumbaugh led the way for Tulane on offense as he finished with 20 points on 6-of-11 shooting including four made threes. The redshirt sophomore guard also dished out a team-high seven assists and matched a career-best five steals. Brumbaugh has scored in double figures in 15 consecutive games including back-to-back games with 20 points.
The next leading scorers for the Green Wave were Mari Jordan and Kam Williams with 15 points each. Jordan contributed connected on 6-of-11 from the field including three makes from downtown off the bench. Williams was a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor with three made threes to go with two blocks and two steals.
Gregg Glenn III rounded out the top performers for Tulane as he tallied 10 points, five assists, and four rebounds in the contest. The output from the junior marked the fifth time in six league games he has recorded at least five assists.
Temple finished with four players in double figures led by Jamal Mashburn Jr. with a season-high 32 points on 12-of-16 shooting. The Owls shot 56.6 percent from the field as a team in the game including a stellar second half connecting at a 65.4 percent clip.
The Green Wave threw the first punch in the contest behind eight quick points from Williams to take an 8-2 advantage just under four minutes into the day. Temple responded to claim its first lead of the game at 11-10 with 13:10 on the clock. From that moment Tulane and the Owls exchanged the lead four times before the half closed with the Wave trailing 33-34.
In the second half the deficit grew to nine points three separate times for Tulane before it faced its largest deficit of the day at 59-70 with 6:20 to play. The Wave did not back down from the challenge pulling back within three points with under two minutes left on the clock.
After the Owls scored to go back up by five, the Green Wave answered quickly with a dunk from Kaleb Banks to make it a three-point game with 39 seconds remaining. On the next possession, Brumbaugh swiped his fifth steal of the contest with 17 seconds left to give Tulane a shot to tie the game. Brumbaugh was forced into a contested three-pointer at the buzzer that unfortunately fell short, and the Wave ultimately fell 77-80.
Up next, Tulane will face another team of Owls as it visits Rice in Houston on Saturday, January 25. The game between the Green Wave and the Owls is scheduled to tipoff at 1 p.m. on ESPNU.
