QUICK HITS
The Tulane women's basketball team trailed by 16 heading into the final quarter of its Saturday home game with Memphis but saw its stirring effort to make up that ground fall just short as the Tigers escaped with a 68-65 victory Saturday afternoon inside Avron B. Fogelman Arena in the Devlin Fieldhouse.
Â
The Tigers were led by a combined 48 points from DeeDee Hagemann (20), Tilly Boler (14) and Elauna Eaton (14). Alasia Smith had a game-high 11 rebounds and four steals, while Hagemann tacked on seven assists.
Â
Tulane got 17 points on five 3-pointers by Victoria Keenan and Sherese Pittman recorded her third double-double with 14 points and 10 boards. Kendall Sneed contributed 10 points and seven assists.
Â
The visitors led by nine (25-16) after one quarter and 14 (47-33) at the half. Memphis used a 13-0 run in the third quarter to grab its largest advantage of 18 (60-42) on a layup by Raven Sims at the 4:56 mark.
Â
Tulane came roaring back in the final period, chopping the lead to three (68-65) on a Pittman layup with 1:56 left. That would prove to be the final margin, however, as Tulane misfired on jumpers in the last minute and Sims got a steal with nine seconds left. The Green Wave fouled four times in the final seven seconds but ran out of time in its bid to send the Tigers to the free throw line.
Â
Memphis was able to do what few others have this season: make 3-point shots consistently against Tulane. The Green Wave came into the game leading the league in perimeter defense (26.1) but surrendered a 47.8 percent clip (10-for-21) on Saturday.
Â
The Green Wave held a commanding edge on points in the paint (42-24), while Memphis (22-10) boasted a double-digit edge on bench points.
Â
The Tigers led for 37 minutes, 18 seconds.
