Green Wave Falls to No. 19 Memphis
Jan 31, 2025 | Men's Basketball
NEW ORLEANS – Tulane men's basketball (11-10, 5-3) suffered its first home conference loss of the season after a late run by Memphis (17-4, 7-1) put the game out of reach ultimately resulting in the 56-68 loss for the Green Wave. The Wave and the Tigers exchanged the lead five times in the second half before Memphis managed to pull away down the stretch.
With the loss, Tulane drops to 9-3 overall at home and 3-1 at home in American Athletic Conference play. The defeat also moved the Wave to 28-178 overall against ranked opponents including 18-61 at home since 1950.
Only two players finished in double figures for the Green Wave in the defensive battle in Uptown. Rowan Brumbaugh tied for a game-high with 19 points with three made three-pointers. The 19-point performance marked the 17th consecutive game the redshirt sophomore has scored in double figures. Brumbaugh also added seven rebounds and a team-high four assists.
Junior Kaleb Banks was the only other player to score double digits for Tulane finishing with 14 points to go with five rebounds, three assists, and two blocks. Banks has now scored at least 10 points in 18 games this season including seven of eight conference games.
The 19th-ranked Tigers finished with three players in double figures as forward Dain Dainja led the team with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Colby Rogers and PJ Carter followed for Memphis each tallying 14 points with four made threes each.
Memphis claimed the initial advantage with the first six points of the contest, but Tulane quickly responded to tie the game at 12-12 on a three-pointer by Brumbaugh. The two teams exchanged the lead three times over the next few minutes before the Green Wave reached its largest lead of the night with a 6-0 run to take a 26-20 advantage 3:54 remaining in the half.
The final run of the first half went in favor of the Tigers as Memphis scored the last nine points before the break to put Tulane behind 26-29 at the break.
Tulane made another early push in the second half to reclaim the lead at 37-33 with 15:04 to play. The Wave maintained the advantage briefly until the two teams traded the lead five times in a two-minute stretch.
Back-to-back three-pointers by Memphis with just over nine minutes to play changed the momentum of the contest as the Tigers began to build an advantage. The Green Wave did not back down pulling within three points with under five minutes remaining, but that would be as close as the Wave would get in the final minutes. The deficit ultimately reached double-digits before Tulane eventually fell 56-58.
Up next, the Green Wave will welcome the Tulsa Golden Hurricane to Uptown on Sunday, February 2. The game between Tulane and Tulsa is set to tipoff at 1 p.m. on ESPNU.
