BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Tulane men's basketball (8-8, 2-1) dropped its first American Athletic Conference game of the season as it fell 69-81 at UAB (9-7, 2-1) on Tuesday night. The offensive glass for the Blazers proved to be a difference maker as the Green Wave surrendered 17 second chance points on 13 offensive rebounds.
With the loss, Tulane drops to 1-3 in true road games and 1-6 away from New Orleans this season. The Wave also falls to 13-27 overall against UAB including 6-14 in Birmingham.
Four players finished with double figures in scoring as the Green Wave shot 49.1 percent (26-53) from the field. Kaleb Banks and Asher Woods led the team with 16 points each. Banks also added a team-high 12 rebounds to record his seventh double-double of the season.
Gregg Glenn III was the next leading scorer for the Wave finishing with 13 to go with five rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Rounding out the players in double figures was Rowan Brumbaugh with 11 points and five assists. Meanwhile, true freshman KJ Greene tallied a career-high nine points off the bench.
American Athletic Conference Preseason Player of the Year Yaxel Lendeborg led four players with double digits for the Blazers. Lendeborg carried the load for UAB finishing with a season-high 25 points while adding 13 rebounds, eight assists, two blocks, and two steals.
Tulane continued its solid starts in league play taking a quick 6-2 lead in the first three minutes. After the Blazers made it a one-point game with 14:56 on the clock, the Wave scored the next eight points to equal its largest lead of the night.
UAB promptly mounted a response to take its first lead of the game at 23-22 with 9:38 to play in the first half. The Green Wave and the Blazers traded buckets over the next several minutes until UAB outscored Tulane 15-6 to close the half sending the Wave into the break trailing 38-46.
The second half began with Brumbaugh and Woods knocking down back-to-back three pointers for Tulane to pull back within two points. The Green Wave tied the game twice over the next few minutes until the Blazers broke a 54-54 tie with an 8-0 run.
Tulane answered the run by UAB again to cut the deficit to three at 59-62 with over seven minutes remaining, but that would be as close as the Wave would get in the final minutes. The Blazers scored the next nine points before extending the lead to as many as 14 points with just over one minute to play. Tulane ultimately dropped the contest 69-81 Tuesday night to fall to 2-1 in conference play.
Up next, Tulane will return home to host South Florida on Saturday, January 11. The game between the Green Wave and the Bulls is scheduled to tipoff at 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
