Woods & Williams Lead Tulane Over Samford, 85-72

NEW ORLEANS – Asher Woods and Curtis Williams Jr. combine for 46 points to lead Tulane men's basketball (1-0) to an 85-72 victory in the season opener against Samford (0-1) Monday night. The Green Wave shot a blistering 58.5 percent from the field and 52.4 percent from beyond the arc to notch its seventh consecutive season opening win.
 
Career nights from Woods and Williams led four players in double figures for the Wave against the Bulldogs. Woods finished with a career-high 24 points shooting 7-of-13 from the floor and a perfect 9-of-9 from the charity stripe. Williams followed with a career-high of his own with 22 points hitting all nine of his shots from the field including four three-pointers. The junior also pulled down a career-best six board to match the team-high on the glass.
 
Rowan Brumbaugh and Tyler Ringgold were the only other players with double-digits as Brumbaugh posted 12 points to go with six boards and a career-best five steals while Ringgold added 10 to match his career-high.
 
Tulane gained separation from Samford by turning 10 steals into a 24-5 advantage over the Bulldogs in points off turnovers.
 
Samford opened the contest with five-straight points before the Green Wave began to build its rhythm on the court. Tulane claimed its first advantage at 11-10 with 13:53 to play before the two teams four times over the next 10 minutes of action.
 
The Wave caught fire in the final minutes of the opening frame mounting a 14-0 run to take a 39-27 lead with 1:22 to play. Scotty Middleton sank a floater in the lane to send Tulane into the locker room with a 43-33 lead.
 
After the Bulldogs got the first bucket of the second half, the Green Wave responded to push its lead 15 at 51-36 with 17:45 on the clock. Samford continued to battle eventually pulling within three points with under 14 minutes to play, but once again Tulane answered the run by the Bulldogs.
 
Woods capped a 10-3 run for Tulane converting a Samford turnover into two points to push the lead back to double figures for the Wave. The advantage eventually reached its peak at 18 points, 83-67, with 3:01 left to play before Tulane secured the season-opening victory 85-72.
 
Up next, the Green Wave will welcome the Texas State Bobcats to Uptown on Saturday, November 8. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m., with live coverage on ESPN+.
