Baseball Opens Season With 12-10 Thriller Over Omaha
Feb 15, 2025 | Baseball
Andrew McKenna untied the 10-10 game in the eighth inning with an opposite field homer to left field to give Tulane a lead the program would not relinquish the rest of the way. The squad picked up an additional crucial insurance run in the frame with Connor Rasmussen scampering home on a wild pitch.
The Green Wave did all the team's scoring in three innings with five runs in the third, five more in the sixth and two in the eighth. Omaha, after trailing early by five, rallied to take the lead with two runs in the fourth inning and four in the sixth frame. The Mavericks entered the eighth inning down 10-6, but again rallied with four runs in the top of the frame making for a very tense and exciting bottom of the frame.
Senior Gavin Schulz went 3-for-4 with two RBIs, a walk and a run scored. Freshman Nate Johnson, in his first collegiate action, totaled four RBIs including a three-run home run in the third and, at that point, the game-tying sacrifice fly in the sixth. Matthias Haas had a pair of hits and has now reached based safely in 14 straight games dating back to the end of last season. Eight of the nine hitters in the lineup registered at least one hit while nine total players were able to cross the plate. Rasmussen, Haas and McKenna all scored two runs. McKenna also totaled two RBIs in the victory with his first RBI coming on a squeeze bunt to score a charging Kaikea Harrison from third.
Luc Fladda started the game for Tulane and went five innings while surrendering just two runs with a career-tying eight strikeouts. Jacob Moore was credited with the win after throwing 1.1 innings of scoreless relief to end the contest.
Next, Tulane continues the three-game series and takes on the Mavericks at 2 p.m. on Saturday in the middle game of the set.
