Woods Beats the Buzzer to Drop Rice 81-78
Feb 15, 2025 | Men's Basketball
NEW ORLEANS – Tulane men's basketball (14-11, 8-4) comes away with a dramatic 81-78 victory over Rice (12-14, 3-10) in Uptown thanks to the clutch heroics from junior Asher Woods at the buzzer on Saturday. Woods drilled a three from the right wing as time expired after Gregg Glenn III blocked the Owls to set up the fast break game-winner for the Green Wave.
With the win, Tulane improved to 11-4 at home this season including 5-1 in conference play. The victory also secured a season sweep over the Owls and moved the Wave to 30-24 all-time against Rice.
The Green Wave trio of Rowan Brumbaugh, Woods, and Glenn III combined for 65 points to lead the offensive charge for Tulane. Brumbaugh notched his 21st consecutive game in double figures as he finished with 25 points on 7-of-11 shooting including 4-of-6 from downtown. The redshirt sophomore also tallied eight assists, six rebounds, and one steal in the contest.
Woods recorded his second-straight game with 20 points as he connected 7-of-12 shots from the field including 4-of-5 from beyond the arc. His fourth and final triple of the day was the biggest shot of the game that delivered the thrilling victory for the Wave.
Rounding out the top performers for Tulane was Glenn III who matched his career-high with 20 points to mark his 13th game this season in double figures. The junior forward also matched his career-best with two blocks including one on the final Rice possession that sparked the run out to set up the game-winner for Woods.
It was a bit of a slow start for the Green Wave in the first half as Rice took the early advantage leading by as many as seven points in the opening 10 minutes. Tulane trailed throughout the opening frame until finishing with a flurry. The Wave scored the final 11 points of the first half to claim a 42-35 lead at the break.
The two teams went back and forth to open the second half before Tulane made a push to build its largest lead of the day at 54-45 with 13:06 on the clock. Rice came right back with an answer cutting the Green Wave advantage to two points with just over nine minutes to play.
Once again, the Wave and the Owls would trade baskets over the next few minutes until Rice reclaimed the lead for the first time with 6:11 remaining. Tulane battled back to take a four-point lead at 75-71 with a little over three minutes to play.
The advantage was short lived again for the Green Wave as Kellen Amos knocked down a three to put Rice back in front 78-76 with 1:07 on the clock. Brumbaugh had the answer for Tulane as he came up clutch at the free throw line again to tie the game with 33 seconds left.
On the next possession Glenn III stepped up on the defensive end for Tulane blocking Trae Broadnax with 5.6 seconds. He then gathered the ball to start the break for the Wave before dishing it to Woods who rushed up to the right wing and drilled a three as time expired to give Tulane the 81-78 victory.
Up next, the Green Wave will welcome East Carolina to Uptown on Wednesday, February 19. The game between Tulane and the Pirates is set to tipoff at 6:30 p.m. on ESPN+.
