Green Wave Sinks Pirates 86-81

NEW ORLEANS – Kaleb Banks and Rowan Brumbaugh powered Tulane men's basketball (15-11, 9-4) to its second consecutive victory defeating East Carolina (15-12, 7-7) 86-81 on Wednesday night in Uptown. Banks and Brumbaugh combined for 46 points as the Green Wave eclipsed 80 points as a team for the for the 11th time this season including each of the last two games.
With the win, Tulane improved to 12-4 at home this season including 6-1 in conference play. The victory also marked the fourth-straight win for the Wave over the Pirates in New Orleans and moved Tulane to 18-19 all-time against ECU.
Banks and Brumbaugh were joined by Kam Williams and Asher Woods in double figures for the Green Wave. Leading the way for the Wave was Bank with 25 points on 8-of-11 shooting including 3-of-5 from beyond the arc. The junior forward also added seven rebounds and three blocks.
Brumbaugh recorded his second-straight game with at least 20 points and his 22nd consecutive game in double figures as he finished with 21 points. He also tallied seven assists to mark his 13th game of the year with at least five assists to go with six rebounds.
Rounding out the top performers for Tulane were Williams and Woods with 13 and 11 points, respectively. Williams pulled down 10 rebounds to notch his second double-double of the season while also adding a pair of blocks.
As a team, the Green Wave made an impact around the rim out rebounding the Pirates 41-37 and recording nine blocks. Junior Percy Daniels matched his career-high with four rejections on the night.
After ECU got the first bucket of the game, Tulane got its offense rolling with a 13-2 scoring run to take control of the lead. The Green Wave pushed its lead out to 14 points at 39-25 with under four minutes to play in the first half.
The Pirates responded to the deficit to pull with seven with 2:25 remaining in the frame. However, the Wave had an answer of its own to close the half with seven unanswered points to take a 46-32 lead into the break.
In the opening minutes of the second half ECU chipped away to cut Tulane's lead back down to seven, but Williams promptly knocked down his third three of the night to make it a 10-point game. After the Wave's advantage was trimmed back down to six points with 13:05 on the clock, Banks sparked a 10-2 run for Tulane with a three-point play.
Tulane eventually extended its lead to 18 points at 71-53 with 8:15 to play. The Green Wave held off a late push by the Pirates by knocking down enough free throws down the stretch to secure the 86-81 victory.
Up next, the Wave will hit the road to visit Wichita State on Wednesday, February 23. The contest between Tulane and the Shockers is set to tipoff at 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
