Green Wave Hosts UNO In First Game of Pelican Cup and Travels to Southeastern Louisiana

TULANE GAME NOTES
NEW ORLEANS –  The Tulane baseball team hosts UNO (1-2) in the first game of the Pelican Cup on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. on Greer Field at Turchin Stadium and then hits the road for the first time this season with a trip to Hammond to take on Southeastern Louisiana (4-0) on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Pat Kennelly Diamond at Alumni Field.
Both games will be streamed on ESPN+ with Jack Benjamin (pxp) and Joey Brockhoff (color) on the call on Tuesday. Wednesday's crew by ESPN+ for the contest has not been announced. The Voice of the Green Wave, Corey Gloor, will call the action on Tuesday against UNO on the Tulane Sports Network from Learfield on 88.3 WRBH /Varsity Network. Wednesday's radio call will be by Ken Berthelot and will be carried exclusively digitally on the Varsity Network. Airtime for radio for both games are 15 minutes before first pitch.
On Tuesday, there will be a Free Beverage Bat giveaway to the first 250 fans along with it being Big Easy Night and a Double Play Tuesday (2-for-1).
Starters - UNO
The Green Wave will start redshirt junior Blaise Wilcenski on Tuesday. He is 1-0 on the season as he picked up the relief victory against Omaha on Saturday. On the year he has thrown 1.2 innings with a strikeout. Last season he appeared in 10 games with five starts while totaling 25.2 innings along with 22 strikeouts.
The Privateers are slated to start Cortez Dennis. The 6-7 senior has yet to appear in a game this season. He went 2-3 last season with a 6.99 ERA and two saves.
In 2024, UNO had a record of 31-26 and 14-10 in the Southland Conference. The program is under new leadership this season, as Dax Norris was named the head coach of the program in December.
Pelican Cup
The Pelican Cup was brought back in 2018. After a two-year hiatus in 2020 and 2021, it returned again in 2022. The Green Wave are the current holders of the cup after going 2-1 last season. The Privateers have captured the cup three times (2018, 2019 and 2023) while Tulane has been the winner of the cup twice (2022 and 2024).
Starters – Southeastern Louisiana
Tulane will start righty Will Clements on Wednesday against Southeastern. He has pitched in one game this season as he threw three scoreless innings in relief on Sunday with three strikeouts and only one hit allowed. Last season he went 1-1 with three appearances and two starts. Clements pitched a total of 8.1 innings with five strikeouts while limiting opponents to a .257 batting average against.
Southeastern will start sophomore righty Chase Ambrose. Ambrose hasn't yet appeared in a game this season. In 2024, he pitched in five games and eight inning with a 5.62 ERA and three strikeouts. Â
The Lions went 28-26 overall last season with a 10-14 mark in the Southland Conference. The program is led by head coach Bobby Barbier. Barbier is in his third year in charge of the program.
UNO Series History
This will be the 160th all-time meeting between the crosstown rivals on the diamond in a series that started in 1971. Tulane leads the all-time series 87-72.
Southeastern Louisiana Series History
The Green Wave and the Lions have been playing against each other since 1947. Tulane leads the all-time series 81-41. The teams split the series last year with the Lions earning an 8-7 victory at home in March and Tulane picking up the 13-6 victory in April.
Notables About the Southland Conference Series
The two games this week against UNO and Southeastern are the first of nine games that Tulane will play against Southland Conference opponents this season. The Green Wave are a combined 303-162 against SLC in the history of the program. The 87 wins against UNO are the third-most the program has in any series only behind 131 against LSU and the 97 against Southern Miss.
Two Honored By the AAC
The program had a pair of players recognized after the first week of the season as Matthias Haas and Trey Cehajic were both named to the Weekly Honor Roll by the AAC on Monday.
Haas, a graduate student outfielder from Oakland, California, earned the distinction after hitting .500 on the week with six hits in 12 at bats. Three of his team-leading six hits went for extra bases with two doubles and a home run. He also picked up 11 total bases, eight RBIs, a slugging percentage of .917, a pair of walks and an on-base percentage of .571 in three games. Haas currently leads the conference in RBIs.
Cehajic, a senior pitcher from Shreveport, Louisiana, was honored by the AAC as well after taking a no-hitter into the sixth inning against Omaha over the weekend. He recorded four strikeouts while limiting the Mavericks to an .167 batting average in earning the first victory of his Tulane career.
Notables from the Omaha Series
Tulane started the season winning all three games against the visiting Mavericks. The program scored double digits in runs in all three games of the series for the first time ever against the same opponent to open the season. The team did score 10+ runs in the first three games victories in 1988, but it was against two different opponents in Spring Hill and Southern. The sweep of Omaha was the first time that Tulane has taken the first three games of the season opening series since 2022 against UMass Lowell. This was only the 11th series sweep to start the year since 2000 (2001, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2012, 2014, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2022 and 2025). Through the first three games, Tulane's freshmen have accounted for seven hits, seven runs and nine RBIs. With the win the program upped its record to 9-3 all-time against current schools in the Summit League and 7-2 against Division I playing baseball schools from the state of Nebraska. The program hit .323 as a team over the course of three games against Omaha with 20 walks compared to just 18 strikeouts. The team was efficient with 32 hits and 32 runs. Of the 32 hits, 11 went for extra bases (34 percent). Gavin Schulz, Matthias Haas and Jason Wachs all hit over .500 over the course of the series. The three combined for 15 hits, 11 runs, two doubles and 14 RBIs and only one strikeout in 28 times to the plate. Luc Fladda and Trey Cehajic started in games one and three and combined for 10 innings with five runs allowed and 12 strikeouts. Fladda tied his career high with eight punchouts to start the season against the Mavericks.

Following the two midweek games this week, Tulane will host Loyola Marymount for a three- game weekend set from Feb. 21-23 starting on Friday at 6:30 p.m. Friday's promotion will be a free Mardi Gras themed coolers for the first 250 fans and Friday Night Bingo.
